Need help changing ship mat files

I have been revamping a lot of ship mat files for a new mod to be released on the server I use but I am having a few problems with the new skins not appearing in game and I have tried many ways but all seem to end in failure.

Certain ships I can seem to change without any problems but others just seem to stay as they were even when I have altered the files and saved the mat.I use a UTF editor to export the files I want to change(I usually check on milkshape first to see which files are where on the ship) and then save them dds format.I create a folder to put these files in and rename them the same as they are originally called ie liberty1_256 but save them as .dds.I then use photoshop to open them and when the file opens I crop it back so I just have the 256 image left. Then I go to work altering the skin.Once I have done what is needed to the skin I save it and when the Nvidia window comes up I set mipsmap to 6 for 256 and 5 for 128.I then import the file back into the mat using the UTF editor I then save the mat and put it back into the mod I am Using. This seems to work on certain ships but not on others. Can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong or perhaps certain ships cannot be modded,I have spent quite a few hours trying to solve what is going wrong but I need some help as I cannot seem to find the answers myself

HarryMonk,

wow.... what a question...

I will try to help...

Freealancer takes the first mat file that is designated for that ship class and uses that.. so if the existing mat file for say liberty ships still exists then it will use that mat file..... and ignore any others. and all the liberty ships use the same mat file..... All freelancer textures even though they are id'ed as .tga are in fact .dds why they did it this way I dunno.. You will have to create a new file for say the patriot.. rename it (patriot_ mk1) and then refer in the appropriate files to that texture.. otherwise the patriot MK1 will still look like the original. I have had this problem with creating new weapons models and it took some head scatching before I was able to work it out.. i'm sorry if this is not a good explanation but it is a very difficult question to answer...

There is a very good tutorial called: 'Kasdias Texture Guide' that provides the necessary plug-ins for photoshop 7 ....... and gives you a step by step process for it..... available

here

If that fails to help you email me the files and I will have a look at them...

Harrier.

I have the kasdias texture guide and this helped me alot when I first started changing the shipmats.(Thanks to pheonix for the texture guide).I will send you a couple of files with the mats for ships that I have altered and the dds files that I altered in each mat so you can see what I've been doing.

Thanks for the help
