Atmospheric Missions

I looked around for info on this but couldn't find anything approaching the info I needed.
I know it's possible to build new systems from scratch. But is it possible to link a planet's docking ring so that it sends you into a scratch built system with a discernible ground, so it's like you flew down toward the planet's surface.
There was the Dyson sphere system in the storyline, so the large ground area should work. And I know that the "ground" system would appear on your nav map. But what about it?
I've seen a system that looks like blue sky and clouds, but does there have to be a star at the center of each system? How about it, anyone tried this. Or would this require changes to the source code?

It's fully possible and has been brought up before, but it seems no one is willing to do it.

its a space game and thats what it mainly focused on as well as the netcode....

it would have been a monumental task to try to do what u want it to do...but it looks possible....once thru the docking ring it just a matter of loading up another space area

Right now I'm just shooting out ideas and such right now. I had planned to do mod for Wing Commander Secret Ops that would have included a bunch of atmospheric missions, but I found out that wasn't possible with the SO engine. But I had already drawn up a lot of ship and technical info, so I turned it all into a WC FanFic. Maybe one day, when I've fully learned how to make custom ships, I'll build the fighters and release them for FL.
