Read the LightWave to FL tut.. have Question

Hi there,

Just read a great tut on how to create your own ship. It raised a Q. When I get hit with a normal ship, you see your ship interact with the shot of the enemy.

In the tut I found that I must add a hardport for the shield, but don't I need to model some shield around the ship? Or does FL calculate the shield distance itself?

Mayby it is a stupid Q... but i'll take my chances.

FL takes care of that for you through a .sur file, which defines the boundaries of your ship and where the shield bubble is projected. Problem is, the file format hasn't been cracked yet. You're stuck with using a .sur from a similarly sized ship to stand in for yours.

thnx,

I think I'll settle for an existing sur file then.
But what if I take a sur file that is smaller than my ship. Imagine I get shot outside the sur file's reach, does FL let it hit my wing for instance? or does FL only use the sur file for boundaries for shield and hull.
I wonder because the shield has an offset to the hull.

try adjusting the origin point of your ship, 0,0,0. You must move your ship many times to correct the positioning of your ship in accordance with sur files origin points. This takes a lot of patient, but its worth it.

origin point is the center mass of your model.

export...check....open modeller...export....check with fl... exit fl .... open modeller again..... tedious huh....
