STARFYRESPAWN: the mimic

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

@RE
I respect your opinion prob more than most as i have witnessed your own modelling skills and must say they are awesome. But im sorry to say i must disagree with you on your pionts.

1, the skins i believe are the same skin, the differnce is the colour depth and bump mapping (or lack of it), spawns picture lacks the depth of colour and the defining lines that the first model have, this is prob due to the second layer of the skin that defines the bump mapping not being used, if you look at the USMC it clearly starts at EXACTLY the same point, the little black line just on the bend of the wing again in EXACTLY the same point, even the little red symbol under the M is there in the same place.

2, The white background on the Lt nathan west name tag is in my opinion caused by the fact that on the original skin the map was used as an opacity map and had a white background, now when that is rendered in 3d studio this would have only shown the black textas the white part was the "see through" part , but when rendered in a package that doesnt support opacity mapping such as milk shape and i believe lightwave. this would appear to be black text on a white background.

3, The hard edge is indeed caused by the viewpiont, as this edge is the underside of the main hull and is not visible from the angle in spawns shot.

@ everyone
Now please ppl dont misunderstand my purpose here, im not out to flame or disrespect spawn in anyway, i think spawn is a very talented graphics artist and has created some very good images. As a modeller myself i get angry when i see ppl taking credit for work that is not theirs, if spawn has indeed remodelled this ship then i take my hat of to him and eat my words, if he hasnt then all im askin is that he gives credit where its due n says that another modeller has actually made this ship....i too now consider this topic closed and will leave it to the readers to judge.

Post Fri Oct 10, 2003 11:26 pm

I can promise you since these ships were a re-creation (i failed to see that part from spawn), we WILL credit the original authors.

I however don't have time to go out and look to see if someone created these first. I put trust in my team so I will take them for their word.

Well, the textures are definately new or at least substantially improved on Spawn's version, for some quick points check the panels in front of the canopy, the side panel in front of the intakes, the leading edge of the wing and the red striping across the engines. There also appear to be several differences in the mesh most of them are visible on the side of the fuselage and again on the leading edges of the wings. Although without being able to see the wireframe it's all speculation.

More importantly, just because someone else goes out and starts accusing eveyone of stealing their (or someone else's) stuff doesn't mean that's the best way to handle it, all it does is get everyone fired up and pissed off at each other. Especially when you're dealing with a recreation of an existing design such as this ship. If you honestly suspect any sort of "theft" involving something that wasn't yours you should bring it up privately to the original author, if you are the original author you may want to settle somewhere other than a public forum to save yourself from eating your own words and keep from potentially ruining someone else's reputation even if your accusations prove to be false. All you've managed to do so far is make a bunch of people think that Spawn was stealing models, and if it turns out that he did create them himself it probably won't matter as the damage has already been done as most people will remember the accusations but how many will remember the appology?

Post Sat Oct 11, 2003 7:01 am

just another speculation, but:
3d artists sometimes touch up their textures temporarily for a rendering run. In this case, it looks like Stefan grimed up the textures a bit to make it more realistic for the shot. The actual release version, however, probably included the original textures, without the dust and grime.

nighthawk is probably right about the name tag.

@victor
sorry but i fail to see your pionts the panels infront of the canopy will look different due to the fact that no bump mapping is used on spawns image hence the defining lines of the hull plates (which is what i assume you mean) are missing, same with the leading edge of the wing, the red strip across the edgines is present in both images and the missing text on the side panels infront of the intake is again an opacity map which reads above and beyond which has simply not been used on spawns image. i would suspect due to the fact the opacity maps could not be used.

What's the big deal.

What I can't understand is all the arguments going on.
Who cares who made what, I thought that we make mods for the enjoyment of the Freelancer fans not to see our name "up in lights". How many of you are making money on all the hard work and time you put into making a Mod.
None, we do it for a hobby or am I missing something.

By the way original artwork by Spawn.

Should I post every time I use this picture that Spawn was nice enough to make this for me because I can't or don't know how, or have a program to do it myself.
Some of us are good at one thing and some at another. Maybe if we put all this
BS aside we could be more productive. Ever hear of TeamWork among other words I could think of.

Gentlemen:

I think we have established a "Public Domain" policy toward anything, and I mean anything, posted on Lancers. It would be polite of Spawn to give credit to the originator of any wireframe he modifies, but if it was posted, it is fair game.

Let's cut the crap and start modding again.

Thank You. Glock 36.

My sentiments exactly

Well iw ent back and had to do some seraching ( and redownlaoding) of files but that is based of the S.May version. Apologize to your freind for my oversite, it was completely unintentionable and stupid on my part. But for the record, you cannot "convert" models like that, the main reason i rebuilt the hi res ones vertex for vertex (as much as i could) is becuase i have to remake them as lower poly gon versions.

I think the fuss is mainly because people do, do it for fun and hate the thought of being used.

Everybody likes to be asked, to feel special and get some gratitude for the work they do. By asking if we can use something we are showing interest and some gratitude. Freelancers early days where hive of stealing, nobody asked for anything and even when pulled up most ignored the complaints of the original artist.

This caused a lot of resentment and short fuses.

It is not common practice to rip off mods whole sale anywhere else in the gaming community but it is in freelancers community.

So people have stopped saying anything, they do not post ideas, new code or answering other peoples questions anymore (as many who email me often tell me). They keep their mouths shut, refuse to help and when they release a mod they go looking for the ignorant types that have ripped it off whole sale and threads like this appear. Paranonia rules because nobody trusts anybody.

I was like that my self once until i woke up after one arguement and found out that I had turned into the sort of guy who dare not post anything or even list my mods features for fear of somebody ripping them off. I still defend my work but I do help folk who email to me as some around here know already. The only reason freelancer is currently still installed is for a source of reference when they write to me these days.

For an Ex freelancer mod maker im very well informed of the new ideas and gossip. Even though ive not asked to be informed. I have had the pleasure of seeing some execellent pre release work from many of this forums most helpful mod makers as a result.

This community may not publicily be as good as it should be, but behind the scenes the honest folk are enjoying making mods in private where their work is safe and they can still get good feedback via email.

BTW that is not an invitation to add me to anybodys mailing list.

One day when all this paranionia stops and people start asking for stuff rather than taking it, those doing the taking may actually see the more enjoyable side of mod making and become addicted to it as I have it.

The Buzz from releasing stuff is strictly for noobs in my opinion, the true benefits are to be found whilst talking to your fellow mod makers and between you generated brand new ideas and seeing how each mod maker recreates that idea in the game, theres always 1 who does a great job and surprises everybody.

Thats where I get my Buzz from, i dont even have to be the guy who created the stunning idea, all i want is the chance to see it and experience it and congratulate the guy on a job well done.

Perhaps thats why i get so many emails. I look but dont touch the code unless asked to check it for somebody.

The way i see it, a private forum for mod makers is the only way to go right now. A place where people can be removed if they are caught steeling code line for line without permission. Ideas should never be considered private though because from one idea comes an even better idea and unless they are shared they can never been any growth or improvement.

Thats my 10 cents worth.

Giskard my old friend it's good to hear from you again.

The Freelancer modding community lost one of it's best modders and one of the hardest working humans in the Galaxy when you disappeared.

I'm glad to see you back, now maybe we can have some more of our hilarious conversations.

Thanks for the kind words Baked

I never rely left, well i did but given how many freelancer emails i get, I didnt if you get my meaning. My posting here as generated a new wave of emails. I dont recognise any of the names on the emails so somebody lurking around here.

That importer you told us all about via email may prove handy for me soon. My mechstorm team have identified several problems with converting models between various programs such as maya, 3ds max and milkshape. So far for maya users DFX seems to be the best format to export and import into milkshape. Though it creates some empty objects.

3DS seems the best alround format which may make your importer obselete but it raises hopes that milkshapes native format can be used directly form Max.

DFX has problems remembering where the texture goes but 3DS does not. OBJ that maya uses seems to combine all groups into 1 for some reason.
