Stress does that to people. Its interesting to see how people revert to fighting when faced with major problems. No offence intended, but will it really stop?

Like I said I am already done. I did what I needed to do. I got people mad enough to where they expressed how they really felt. Call me a manipulating bastard, but out of all the moddding community, we KNOW the following:

I know where people firmly stand
True people's natures where revealed
We know the few people we can count on and alot of those we can't.
Supposed friends turned enemies due to fear of their own possible illegal actions.

I don't know why MS named the people in the readme, yet I suppose they had their reasons and apparently some people got real jumpy.

I'm not worried though. I just posted it up to let people know what was going in. I never made it a big deal, others did. Look at all the people who started posts about it.

Most of the problems exteneded from people assuming the following without getting the facts first.

1: Many assumed we were copyrighting EVERYTHING. - Not true. I've already listed what we were.

2: People claimed we were selling merchandise and making loads of money: WAY not true. I consider spending over $1000 for server costs alot of money. We never accepted donations, nor sold anything.

3: That we purposely targeted or turned in people to MS when they actually read our readme and targeted people themselve. Yet the people in the credits in the readme asked to be in there. Not our fault.

People can say what they want, it doesnt really matter anymore.

Well assumption is much easier then finding out the facts and 99% of people do it. I have been guilty of it on occasion.

Today almost everyone made massive and incorrect assumptions. No doubt many many people feel pretty foolish right now. They showed who they really were and once you show that you can never take it back. Just like the words you say. You can try and cover it up and smooth it over, but people will remember.

Are you going to keep us updated with what (if any) actions MS takes, or news about TNG Reynen?

Post Tue Oct 07, 2003 5:20 am

Hehe, its funny to see everyone's reactions about this! In all seriousness though:

The only reason Microsoft went after TNG was because Starfyre incorporated. You cannot legitimently distribute the mod if your group is incorporated. It doesn't even matter if its non-for-profit, the fact remains that an organization was distributing pieces of Microsoft's copyrighted code. Sure the same can be said of individual modders, but do you really think microsoft is going to waste its time going after every little guy like you and me over this? No. They will go after big fish like Starfyre and others. So its an easy resolution..... DON"T INCORPORATE YOUR ORGANIZATION! Everyone else has nothing to worry about. Mod away if you like. Microsoft woud have hit us all sooner than they did if they cared about individual modding!

Plus, the naming of the names in the readme? Thats just a scare tactic. Name a few names, and people start shakin in their boots! Hehe, nothing to really worry about though....

The only real problem i can see in this is that before you tried to register as a company, you did not let Giskard and the others know about it. If that was part of the manipulation i can only say that it was very low of you. Either way the least you could have done was inform them about what you were doing especially for a large step like this. Now this isn't a flame or anything like that but its a reminder about social responsibility.

Strider & Wanderer:

I am very suprised at you two. Making assumptions after that post I just put about how many people do it....

1: We did not incorperate, whoever told you that was wrong. I went for a sole proprieter. BIG difference. Also who said a company can't distribute mods? Lots of companies out there do. We were not going to make people pay for it and accepting donations is not a crime, which we DID intend to do in the future.

2: I agree about the scare tactic.

3: Actually giskard and them asked not to be on our update list. They made their choice. We did not bother them because they dodn't want to be bothered.

They DID know we have been talking about going legit and applying for a copyright for a long time now. Giskard was the first one to actually mention it since he said he went for one with his ships.

4: To set the record straight, the manipulation was aimed at finding out where the modding community stood. We needed to know if we were going to fight it.

Would you go to court if you knew only 2% of the people were supporting you. At this point we have very little support both in terms of people and money.

We would not and could not fight this.

well, sorry if i blew my fuse a bit, but calling someone like me disloyal is not the right way to go about it. i know you did not specifically point me out or anything, but im pertty sure you were implying me and a few other people in that post. im not disloyal just because i agree with microsoft. i already said something simaler. if i were disloyal, this community would probably be a living hell with what id do.

Looks like modding is a "kick my ass" job.

You credit someone : wrong
You don't credit someone : wrong
You put something in your mod : wrong (you may touch some copyright)
You don't put something in your mod : wrong (people ask for it)
You don't want others to take your stuff : wrong (how could you not share?)
You want to use others stuff : wrong (why you don't do it by yourself?)
And so.

IMHO, Reynen is a good modder, who took seriously the modding job, assembled a group of people to do it, they cared to test and support their work.
Maybe SS haven't asked MS for permision, but who had? Maybe, for some good reasons they included to much in their distribution (ie. EXE file). Maybe they became to much popular. But still TNG is a good work, worth of further developement. And I hope they will have some agreement with MS. For the good of all us playing and modding the games.
Raynen has his point of view and his way of telling this. B-) Let's help him together instead of kicking his butt. He is the first, any of modders can be the next.

We do it all for fun, don't we?

Alright, I've had it. Raynen - You have crossed the line.

Whining and complaining away... and when you finally see that you have no grounds and no support... "Oh... uh... I meant to do that! I was manipulating you all! See.. I'm just too smart for you!".

....

Is anybody else sincerely irritated by that fact?
