Removing Thruster smoke effect?

I find that if I am doing a very sharp and the enemy is in front of me, the smoke front a thruster burst can sometimes block my view. And besides, it just looks silly in space.
So, how would I got about removing the smoke? Also, can I change the color of the flame? Thanks for any help or answers!
