New Ship "Ogre" (WIP)

So I figure, what the ... one more new ship can't hurt. 99% finished, just have to skin the underside of the wings. Just a mean teaser really though, this won't be released as a stand-alone ship You'll just have to wait for the rest of the package... I got my nomex ready, flame on!

All images are 640x480 jpegs, not too big but I'll spare everyone the agony of putting them directly in the topic.

One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Six
Seven
Eight (New)
Nine (New)

That should be enough for one day. If you're curious about the stats, it has 1672 polygons (faces) and about 1.6MB worth of textures most of which will be shared with other variants of this ship. The variant shown is a 2-seat assault/bomber with room for 4 guns, 4 torps, 3 turrets, 1 thruster, 1 mine and 1 CM dropper. No special internal weapons and all hardpoints are clearly visible on the ship.

Added screenshots eight and nine showing the now finished underside textures. Some in-game shots should be next unless I get horribly distracted.

Nice modelling. What do you use by the way (program wise) and did you start off with no idea how to model and learn, or did you already have prior knowledge?
just curious

Hey Chips, thanks

I'm poor and honest so I'm stuck with Milkshape ($25) for the modeling and Paint Shop Pro ($79) for the textures. I've been doing skins and textures for years but I only started modelling anything more complex than a crate about two weeks ago, I just decided I wanted to learn for myself and picked up every tutorial I could find, started simple and moved on from there. So basically I'm a n00b when it comes to modelling, although I've had the opportunity to look at a lot of models and how they were made while I was skinning them and I'm sure that's helpped me a lot.

So if you want to get started go for it I'd suggest looking at as many models as you can to see how other people do things while at the same time going through a lot of tutorials, even the ones where subject matter that doesn't interest you can be a big help as they'll show you some cool tricks along the way. I must have deleted 20 different (very ugly) characters models I made using assorted tutorials

Wow nice model

what did you use to make that?
Personally I use Gmax to create my masterpieces

Very nice can't wait to play with it in-game

Like Gmax better than Milkshape and it is free

Yeah, Gmax isn't bad the only problem is that you can't export directly to Freelancer from it and I'd rather learn and use one tool that cheat my way through using two of them. And, like I said before, I'm honest so I'm not going to use Tempest (which is licensed solely for the purpose of providing feedback to Discreet Software) to export Gmax models in a format I can use with Milkshape. Besides, there's a certain pride to be had by accomplishing things with low-end tools and if somebody can make a nicer model with 3ds Max (or Gmax) than I can with Milkshape I won't feel so bad.

Well I ummm don't think that much into what programs I use to get my models into Freelancer - lol
And I see what you mean and I have to say you should be proud that is a very cool model for a low end tool, Good Job

Thanks

So it made it into Freelancer this evening, but my first run with it showed me that it needs a new cockpit, in order to scale the ship up to where I want it the pilot looks like a Keebler elf in there. Fortunately the cockpit litteraly pops right off the rest of the ship and I needed new cockpits for the other variations anyway so it's a very minor setback, all things considered.

Victor,

Seems to me you should be doing the texturing tutorial... lol. Your model looks great... and a completely different approaoh to mine.......

If I'm not out of line here, perhaps we could work together, and maybe do something worthwile... ask for contributions from other modellers out there..

What do you think.....?

Harrier.

wish i could texture like you...

Working hard to earn... but too lazy to do something...

Post Tue Sep 16, 2003 5:12 am

Heh Harrier, I told you I did the tutorial once before, now it's your turn If you'd like you can email me, the address in my profile is valid, and we can talk shop a bit. All I can say about textures like this is that it's 90% technical 10% artistic it's all in the layers and how you blend them really. Well, I have a few closely guarded "base" textures I use for the metals and paints, but those are pretty easy to create with a little patience.

I'm not sure I have time for any more projects, right now I have my own Freelancer project, one paying graphics job and some freelance work on the side I do regularly; all in addition to my real job. I have a good sized stack of other people's models waiting for skins too, but they get sorted by workload, mine are first, models where the author took time to make a good UV map are next and the rest are at the bottom since they need a lot of work. Anyway, like I said above, just send me an email and we can talk more about stuff like that too.

And Firebase, not long ago I said I wished I could make models like you (I think I even posted that somewhere here), I'm not there yet but at least I'm a heck of a lot better at it that I was. Now it's your turn

And thanks for the compliments you two, hopefully nobody will be disappointed when they see it in the game for themselves.

Wow, that's pretty. Me wants.
There seems to be a lack of good ships being brought to FL. I mean, they come along, like this one, but all in all, they're nowhere near as prevalent as they should be. It's almost enough to get me to start modeling, something I've been avoiding for years.

Well thank you Xeno, and go for it, c'mon if I can do it you can do it

I'm heading out of town for a week tonight, I have the new cockpit modeled I just have to skin it and reset some of the hardpoints than I can add some in-game shots. So it'll sit on the shelf for a week first and then get finished in a day

My modeling skills are decent but my skinning is terrible. I'm working on it but all that i seem to be able to do is place simple textures.

The ship looks really sharp though...i dig it.
