How do u extract textures?

I know it's somehow done with UTF Edit but whenever i try to extract the tga files from the .mat files they don't work. Has anyone done it yet.

Also is there a place where people have uncompressed the original ship textures or at least a website somewere that has a texture database of some sort? Nobody will help me skin my ships, so I'll have to resort to using the original texturs from freelancer.

Although the original ship textures are labelled .tga they are actually in .dds format. The Nvidia website has a set of tools available for download to work with .dds files.

Alternatively use Reven's importer which will extract the .dds file (if you know the location of the .mat file containing them) to .tga .bmp .gif etc.

And again I answer my own question within 1/2 hour. For those who don't know I will make a short tutorial right here.

You need UTF Edit, you can get that in the downloads section and there are links on this forum as well.

Once you run it open .mat files in the SHIPS subdirectories. Just look for them they are there. Then expand the "/" thingie, and then texture library. There will be all those tga files and under each one there are "MIPS". The MIPS are the actual texture files themselves but if you read under the ASCII box you will see that they are not atual TGA files, they are DDS1, or .dds. so go ahead and extract the file as "blabla.dds".

Then you need a dds plug-in for photoshop or whatever program u use. Since I have photoshop and the link nVIDIAs site did not work I found another one. It's slow but hey it works.

ftp://ftp.redclaw-network.de/breed/misc./dds.zip

Just extract the .8bi file or whatever it's called into the plugins/file formats directory found in your photoshop folder.

.dds also supposrts mipmaps whatever the hell those are.

EDIT: Heh redeye kinda beat me to it. Actualy you responded as I was typing this.
