idea for custom collision "boxes"
As far as I can tell, no one has yet decoded the infamous sur file. Here is an idea for bypassing that:
-take your ship model and place hardpoints evenly spaced around (and bit under the surface of) the ship hull and define those hps as if they were hps for custom weapons
-delete the textures of a small asteroid
-now define that asteroid as the custom weap
-define the ship so that it sells with those asteroids mounted
-in effect you build your collision surface with lumps the shape of small asteroids
-in game, the asteroids should be invisible, but collisions that happen to them will impact your ship hull if you are out of shields
edit: if there was an object more conveniently shaped than an asteroid it should work just as well, I guess
