I would not suggest Truespace. It's buggy, support is bad, and will cause you to lose more hairs than intense radiation.

Right know, Milkshape 3D is the best to use for FL because it's the only one able to export to CMP format. (There's a trial version available)
But you can try some other free programs such as GMax (a free, mod oriented version of 3DSMax from Discreet), Wing3D, Blender, etc... or trial versions of Rhino3D, Lightwave, Maya and some others...
That's probably the best way to make your choice.
The problem with all these tools is that they're not all adapted to low-poly modeling and you won't be able to export your work directly to FL. As far as I know, you're obliged to use Milkshape for that...

Personnally, I use Milkshape and I'm very happy with it. It's cheap, powerful, it's quite easy to learn, it can be used for a lot of games and it's certainly the best for texturing...

I will have to check out gmax; never heard of it before. Yes, Rhino is for professional nurbs modelling, you will end up with models with mad polycounts. The right way to go about low poly modelling is to build it up triangle by triangle, no primitives. But that takes a long time too.

reply@darkpetzi: oho! That is hot stuff Will try it out.

actually, I registered gmax and tried it out, seems to have a small caveat: it only saves into gmax format. Apparently, your game has to be 'gmax ready'. There are plugins you download to convert models to your gmax ready game. Unfortunately, fl is not one of them.

Milkshape exports to dxf. Is there some program to convert it out of the .gmax or .p3d formats when you're done with your model though?
