how do i get the game to read an edited file?

okay, i went through the steps that are on this site to change engine color. after editing i have a ini file. my question is: do i need to recompress the file to make the game read it or something else, how and with what program would i do that?

FL reads decopressed inis too, so you don't need to recompress it

well it won't read my ini file. its the file that i used to make the changes but when i take out the original file (the engines file that i used the make my ships engines change color) that i uncompressed to get a file to edit and took out the original file and left in the edited one, in ini format, and loaded the game, i couldn't take off because the game said "can't take off without an engine" how can i make the game read my edited file??? i'm using windows xp, does that bother it?

At this point, I'd suggest posting the part of the .ini you changed and showing us where you changed it. I think you would have only had to change one or two of the lines that define what engine effects are used.

You don't have to recompress the file. You probably made a ship which in the goods.ini, did NOT include an engine. Thats why the game says "can't launch WITHOUT engine". Sometimes its the most obvious errors that messes things up.

wanderer what do you mean? i used the engine_equip file to make the changes that the game won't read. do i need to change the ini in to a configuration settings type of file?

ha ha ha ha ha ha i am so stupid. i didn't know that i had to over write the original file with the edited one. now it works
