The nature of mods on the net.

Hello all.

We all see mods getting ever bigger each day and some mod maker do not appear to see the link between mod sizes and available bandwidth (very costly bandwidth).

Everything that uses bandwidth costs somebody money. Unless they are either a true hobbyists doing this for fun and dont mind giving you their bandwidth for your mod, they will sooner or later start complaining at the size of the downloads if the downloads are not paying for the bandwidth in some way.

Free sites that offer unlimitated bandwidth usually find its a mistake and pull the plug when a bandwidth hogging file appears in their logs. The downloads are generally slow too and unreliable.

Paid for sites with their own bandwidth such as my site have limits that if exceeded means the sites get closed until the end of the month when the bandwidth is reset.

So its worth considering the bandwidth issue when making your mod.

Mods are linked to the available bandwidth on the net for any given site. The more large mods a site hosts the slower that site goes if all are in demand. This means the mod maker must consider this before releasing huge mods.

Optimizing textures in a mod is a great way to save bandwidth because these eat up lot on their own. Removing unwanted files is another way.

At the end of the day, your mods are hosted only as long as the hosting site can cope with the load or the persons isp doesnt pull the plug on a customer for eating more than their fair share of the bandwidth up.

The link between bandwidth usage and mods is something all mod makers MUST consider if you do not want to be responsible for seeing potential hosts closing their doors on all mods in the future.

So get optimizing guys.

Its also more user friendly
The user being the player who wants to download your mod.
