I out of here.

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

I out of here.

Hello guys.

I love freelancer and I love Lancers Reactor but its clear to me that some mod makers have no respect for the wishes of their fellow mod makers in this forum and do not actually contribute anything new either, only compilations of other peoples work, so Im leaving.

Rather than kick up a fuss at LR who have done nothing wrong and provide a great service, I will post my thoughts on my own website.

Sorry LR, youve been great.

Sucks that you are leaving. While I ask people how to do things, I don't steal their work. At least not everyone here is an ungrateful thief. When you joined this community you should have realized that the people around here are like this for the most part. I know that when I will publish my mod people will steal code from it and use it claiming that they made it themselves. But that is a risk I am willing to take. After all I'm just doing this to make Freelancer more fun for myself, not to be some reveered figure in Freelancer modding. After all they are just a bunch of text files. Calm down, and reconsider your choice. If you leave, well at least I'll be sorry.

I am not going to comment about your disputes with other mod makers, it is nothing to do with me and is for you and the people involved to resolve. Tho i'm sure everyone would like to see a less drastic solution to these problems.

While you are still around anyone who pays any attention to the modding scene will know what code is yours and what is not - whatever name it is under. Discontinuing will only leave the doors open to outright theives who will pass of your code as their own.

Like nAv says, take some time to condsider this, leaving would be a real dent to the creative spread in FL modding.

I may simmer down in a day or so.

I gave them ships and only asked they leave the systems alone. Not much to ask to prevent HU being like half a dozen other mods out there. I mean whats the point of me making a mod if it looks and feels like everybody elses ?

Nobody wants to spend their life recreating the wheel over and over again at some point we want our wheels to look different from everybody elses.

Anyway see my sig for a link that explains why im pissed off.

Please no flaming on this forum, I dont what this to spoil these forums.

hey dude,

i really hope you can be persuaded to change your mind. we all know who the plagarisers are and accord them all the repect due to someone who's learned how to cut and paste.

in time i think those responsible will fade away from the community through either lack of real ideas or things to steal.

in the end i feel that a real comminity of serious modders will emerge, all making individual mods adding a special flavour to the game.

it would be nice if HU was among them.

Scratch that, I figured out how to protect my work in the future. Since I cannot trust some mod makers to keep their dirty little hands off the bits I want to keep Im going make HU so incompitable with any other mod that simply taking bits of it will make other mods crash out all the time.

Skilled mod makers will probably sus it out but they are the ones that put time and effort into their work so thats not so bad. No more 5 minute cut and paste mods for the rest of them.

I think im actually going to enjoy reading some of the complaints about those mod makers that go out of their way to kill off original mods like HU after they try it with version 7.

I can understand that you are upset that people are stealing your work and making it if its as your own. Still, will you change yourself because of the actions of othes and leave or will you remain a mod maker to the core? I can't stop you if you want to leave but i hope that you remain.

That's my plan too

Every item I make has a custom nickname that's easy to spot, also with all of the cross-file dependencies they'll almost be forced to copy all of the files in which case it will be *very* easy to spot. I've also been having fun with stupid little things, like running lights, and if they miss that file it'll crash endlessly for them, if they use it, it'll be easy to spot unless they take the time to go through line by line and change it.

I won't mind mod authors using it for ideas or using it like a tutorial, but I'm definately making it difficult for the "cut & pasters" After all, it's my project and I don't want to see it burried in some hideous compilation that destroys the original idea behind all the changes I made, nor do I want to see some n00b come along and post it as his own "materpiece" after changing the readme.txt and adding some lame "uber" ship to manhattan.

Now I just have to figure out what to do if/when I get around to making some custom ship models.

My concern is the same. Mod makers are catching on that the decent thing is to thank the people who created the work they use, thats not really a big concern any more. Im not after credit in that way, I just dont want them taking credit for work they didnt do. The guy who triggered this has HU V5 almost entirely packed into his mod. It turns out its disable but I was left confused as to why it was there in the last release of his mod. Hu V5 was ripped off so badly i started to speak out about it and have been ever since.

My main concern is that if HU is copied in its entirity then my reason for making it is suddenly taken too. If people like me who produce original work are no longer around to continue doing that, who are they going to steal from next ?

You may have noticed that a lot of mod makers are strangely absent from this forum these days, they turn up, announce a mod and vanish again. They dont help noobs, they dont help anybody, nor do they post new stuff they figured out any more.

Given what this community is like sometimes, helping anybody could be seen as helping them to rip off your mod in a few weeks time. So some dont do because they too have been ripped off already.

Each time i release a mod I can see the vultures circling over head. Im wondering how many will only take the parts im willing to give and who many dont care at all.
