NOT FOR NOOBS: Reading involved

Hello.

Hehe, couldnt resist it.

I just posted in that noobs fl expansion thread, the twat hehe but it did raise a point about unanswered questions in here. I think i understand why people avoid the questions.

Firstly:
We get lots of these types of posts.

1) "I need a team to make a mod."
2)"I want to form a team to make a mod. Sign up here."
3)"how do i make a ship/system/bacon sarny."
4)"This mod suxs because it doesnt work for me".

I think some advice is in order to clear some stuff up and get more answers to good questions posted.

Lets take item 1 first.

1) "I need a team to make a mod".

Before asking this question, always check the mod announce forum for news of other mods. Most ideas are already available in mods so asking for an existing feature just shows everybody how little you have done to actually find the feature you confess to wanting before posting about it.

2)"I want to form a team to make a mod. Sign up here."

If you cannot make ships, make systems or editing anything your self then why would anybody want to join your team. You first have to make a small mod, prove your skills before others will listen to you. After that you will find people are much more willing to listen and sign up. Nobody will sign up with a person with no skills because they know they will be doing all the work and not the guy who had the idea in the first place. So get some experience before posting questions like this. If you cannot texture, learn, if you cannot make ships learn. Its a very rewarding hobby and worth learning. I didnt know how to do either of those until i started making my mod. Its not hard, so dont rule it out before trying it first. If you mess up you will find lots of mod makers jumping to your aid when you ask questions on specific subjects.

3)"how do i make a ship/system/bacon sarny."

Guess how many times I have seen these questions posted and guess where i learnt to make ships. Yup in a tutorial like most mod makers. So where do you suppose the person who replies is going to send you after 2 days waiting for answer ? Yup to the tutorial forum. You could save your self 2 days by going there in the first place then coming back with specific questions and you will get quick answers.

4)"This mod suxs because it doesnt work for me".

My favourite, work done for free is cause for complaint. I think most makers would say, give me £30 and i'll listen to your complaints for few minutes before ignoring you like most official devteams do in other forums. Honestly, your not going to get people responding in a nice way to posts like that, even if they agree, in this forum they will take the mod makers side. Because guess what, they are all mod makers. Funny i know but it is the odd thing about this forum.

Conclusion.

The first thing any good mod maker needs is a little common sense and initative. If your posts lack either of those then your showing others you simply dont have what it takes to go through with an idea. So they wont reply. So knuckle down. Dig up the bits you need, ask specific questions and you will get good answers in return.

I hope you noobs see my point and see the reasoning behind it.

ALL mod makers have spent a great deal of time digging through these forums for stupid details they have need at some point. So we all know anybody who cannot check the tutorial forum or do a simple search is going know where as a mod maker in this community because hes unwilling to do what all mod makers must do to get started.

EG research.

So the fact that you didnt look simply tells everybody youve not got the right stuff to make a mod. They know it the instant they see a question thats been asked thousands of times already.

So they dont reply because they know searching the forums is a fact of life for established mod makers and you couldnt even find a common question your self so how can they expect you to find the answer to weapon damage later or camera rotation values.

The stuffs right under your nose and you have closed your eyes whilst shouting, wheres the info i need.

What would think of a person who did that in front of you on a subject you where familar with ?

Exactly my point.

This is why noobs have problems getting answers. Show willing and so will the old hands in this forum.

Edit: Search functions, what to search for.

General Searches, applies to most aspects of FL, ships, bases, systems etc.

Search words = Infocards, id_name, id_info, utf_edit.exe, reshack, FLEd-ids.exe, BiniQDU.exe, = true (solution to an error in the arch files that makes the bases job case off no missions).

Ship searches, all things ships.
Search words = shiparch.ini, goods.ini, market_ships

System Searches = All things systems.
Search words = Universe.ini, market_commodites, market_misc, market_ships, mbases.ini, news.ini, solararch, encounters,
Also see the Freelancer\DATA\UNIVERSE\SYSTEMS folder

AI Searches = AI ships and alignments.
Search words = loudouts.ini, loadouts_special.ini, loadouts_utility.ini, npcships.ini, shiparch.ini, faction_prop.ini, shipclasses.ini, mshipprops.ini, empathy.ini, initialworld.ini, mpnewcharacter.fl, encounters

Everything else touches one of those search words. Including commodities, base news, rumours and lot of other things. The names are pretty descriptive so common sense will be enough to find the word you need. Faction prop is probably the only name thats not very descriptive but it is a good name for what it does. It means faction props, in this case, what ships the factions fly, what they scan for and what formations they use.

hey dude,

excellent post wonder how many of them will read it? you could always change the title to "sp cloak revealed" or something like that - im starting to wonder if they have bin stickied and just forgot to change the icon

dr del

uhm ...its hard

Post Thu Jun 19, 2003 4:15 am

Hey maybe if you put this up and changed the topic to "Complete step-by-step guide mod guide" they'd read it. But then we all have to bump it up frequently or it would get burried below that cloak post that they can't get past.

Hey, one question though... can you make some bacon for me, I can't find the program I need to uncompress that package and it would be so much easier if you just did it fof me

Post Thu Jun 19, 2003 4:35 am

Well, to be perfectly honest, I expect this post to wind up lost in the shuffle eventually. Seems to happen on EVERY modding board I have ever frequented, the good posts sink into anonymity, and the newbs just keep flooding the forums with the same questions, arguments and other BS that causes the vets to just start ignoring ANY 'newb' post.

Post Thu Jun 19, 2003 6:28 am

Well if 2 noobs read it and think yup hes right and head over to the most excellent tutorial forum for a quick read i will be happy.

In the mean time, you guys could always link them to this when they ask stupid questions. Highlighting the very end of the post so they get the point.

Research is after all the key to success and if they cannot be bothered to do it, they are doomed to fail.

We all know it, its about time they new it too id say.
Perhaps a catchy slogon in everybodys sigs pointing this out.

EG "What you did not read the tutorial, good bye you are the weakest link, hits the skip thread button".

lol.

hey guys,

how about renaming it to "new modders please read" and getting it made into a sticky by one of the nice admins?

Any new mod makers (to be) read this yet? Just curious... anyone up for a friendly wager?

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 1:41 am

Yep it has been read by a new .... well not mod maker.... but an aspiring ship designer..... who has specific questions to ask. but needs to do some more work so that the question(s) can be put into context in order to get the correct answers. I know the answers are there on the forums and even tho I've tried to do specific searches and have downloaded a lot of stuff that has helped me, questions still remain..... But that's life ain't it? I must give credit to some who have helped me when they didn't need to, they will get the credit when the new ship is ready.

I will post a list a bit further down the track. thanx for the suggestions.

Another n00b here. That's 2 Giskard

I've just started playing around with the modding side of fl, it's immense fun and very satisfying when you get something right. It does take a lot of patience and reading to learn, but it seems unfortunately most n00bs are impatient and want instant results, they want to run before they can walk (I'm still crawling ). Were not all bad.

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 8:29 am

Woohoo Success
Im happy.

Lol.

The good thing about posting a specific question is everybody who reads it can actually answer it in a straight to the point sort of way. You see, your not asking such broadly based questions as "how do i add a ship to game" which would take 4 or 5 pages to explain properly and has been explained already in the other forum.

Plus a specific question shows you are putting in the work your self and not expecting others to hold your hand at every turn. Hand holding is not how it works anyway and those that need it are likely to waste their time and everybody elses.

However the issue of knowing what to search for when your a noob is a problem we all understand. Trying is still advised because it usually uncoverse several other topics you will need to know about shortly afterwards anyway. So knowing those threads exist is a good thing, even if you didnt read them during the first search.

When people get stuck and all else fails you will find a lot of people are more than willing to answering your question via email. Well I am anyway. So if you stuck you know theres a system that will get you unstuct and if you want to know something nobody had done then you will know it when you dont get a good answer.

Its then your duty to explain it to the rest of us ))

My contact details are in the mod announce forum, just look for Hostile Universe.

Well I'm glad nobody took me up on that bet

To confirm what Giskard said, you can email almost anyone and you'll get a good reply, I've sent and received many questions and answers with individual mod authors that way, it works well and I think the answers I get through email are much better than here at the forum.

Just be sure to follow the same guidelines for posting on the forum when you send an email

if your crawling then im on my belly trying to move like a fish outa water. ive done ini based modding before but it was all very basic RTS when i saw it was ini based i was all roxxors, pwnage but then when i opened it up and saw it was a bit more complex i made a facial expresion that looked kinda like this 0.o

lol harder then i figured but im getting it what would help is if all the ships and weapons used the game names for the ini code. currently if i want to mod a weapon lets say class one i gotta find all class one weapons of the type im looking for and change em :
so far the only thing i made was a blood dragon commerce raider with low damage very rapid fire plasma cannons i want it to be laser, with two special made missile launchers for taking out highly maneuverable fighters from a really long ways away

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 11:14 pm

Ha thats the trick isnt it.

Unless you check the forum for the names + codes (some exist), you have to look up the id_name in a program like FLEd-ids.exe. Then make a note of it.

The current list if names + codes uses the id_name code + the name held in the dll at that location. Which makes it a completely useless list for mod makers. Whats needed is a nickname = realname chart.

I did gather some info today for my own mod though. About shields and other things. I dont use the real names much anymore so it doesnt really effect me. I even call the ships by their nicknames so im really confused when somebody says titan instead of the nickname hehe.

Anyway heres some stats that will allow you to see at a glance the differences between some stuff. Been meaning to make a list for a while but i keep forgetting. This is handy when your making ship entries in the goods.ini.
