Freelancer Super-Universe Development Concepts Introduction

Hi out there.

Well, I am sure you know I am new here. I am a long time mod builder for a wide range of games including NWN, Treadmarks, Doom, Quake & others.

Just got the game, it ROCKS! I have seen all these kick ass mods, and am now starting to work up for a new mod for FL. I am wondering though, does anyone know if increasing the size of the overall universe itself is possible? I am talking like adding jump-holes and jump-gates that will take you to an entirely new system grouping map. Hope you guys have some suggestions and other info.

Here is the beginning of my list of ideas and some of my plans for the Mod.

All current ships pilotable (Already done apparently, but not in ways I was impressed with)
New ship classes for Fighters, Freighters plus the addition of entirely new ship classes including bombers, construction ships(to re-build destroyed trade lanes) and repair ships(to allow 'in the field' vessel repairs)
Asteroids and other solars to all be destroyable(I know about the crashes when bases with players in them are destroyed, but there has to be a fix/work-around for this issue)
New resources of both legal & contraband types(also need to figure out how to make different resources considered contraband in different systems. ie Gun-Running in some systems should be illegal)
New weapons in all classes.
New thrusters in all classes.
New shields in all classes.
A wider range of performance envelopes for all ships, shields, thrusters, etc.

Anyhow, here is your introduction to my plans and ideas. Do give me feedback and suggestions. Thanks for reading this.

First off, don't get irritable.

I would also like know myself if the FL universe is a fized size or expandable. I think it is fixed, if I remember correctly. I don't think you can add in another sector either. But if I am correct, I think it is possible to add in a great number of systems into the Sirius sector.

Since you can't fly (based on game programming) from one system to another, you can only jump, it may be completely possible to have overlapping systems, because they aren't connected by anything other than a jump. At the moment, there is no need to overlap, there is plenty of room for several systems as already being made by other modders. I may be wrong about the overlapping and limitless systems idea.

As for some of your ideas, I like the idea of having more classes for ships, but they may not be able to used as you may like. Construction ships and repair vessels may not be possible for anything but adding traffic, because I don't recall the game actually being able to have ships do such specific tasks. One modder did think of adding a "med gun" which had a negative damage (adding back armor) but it doesn't work for shields. But applying it to a repair ship at the time that you need it, that would be hard.

More contraband is also something others are doing, and much needed in my mind. I personally would love to see 1000's of commodities, but that may never happen. But commodities only being contraband in certain systems doesn't sound possible.

Adding new weapons, engine & shield classes I don't know anything about. I would just offer the suggestion, beware of things that are hard coded, you may end up wasting your time for no result. Same thing with the other things, thrusters and such.

As for no previous responses to your post, lots of newbies post "great ideas" or so they think. I'm not discrediting yours, I'm just pointing out that constant posters get a little tired of it and it's very likely to be lost in the mix. If you want a greater reponse to what you write, I also suggest being very specific with your subject line. Yours is pretty good, albeit a little vague. And perhaps TOO big a concept. "Super Universe" this might say to expert modders "This person doesn't know how hard it is just to get a "somewhat neat universe."

You can agree or disagree.

Faction specific (not system as far as I know) contraband can be created by following the tutorial located here:

AHHH!!! these forums are screwed up, whenever I hit the key to create the square brackets I get the carrot symbol (and when I hit the carrot I get the question mark!)

Anyway, Ièll keep looking for stuff to help you, but lots of the stuff sounds hardcoded (like the universe map, that is hardcode Ièm 90 percent sure).

good idea, but some things are just impossible without adding the engine (wich is not possible yet). i mean like repairing tradelanes, if you leave the system all the killed stations and lanes will be back,same counts for docking and dieing so that wont have use. But if you do make it work it would be really cool

Thanks for finally replying. I was just a bit irratable over not even apparently being given a slight suggestion or thoughts on my ideas. I do realize some things may not be modifiable at all. But without a bit of input from the vets around here, how is a 'newbie' modder like myself supposed to learn. I mean, I have copied almost every single tutorial here to text files on my local system just so I have them available for easy reference. But a lot of these tutorials either don't touch on some of my ideas at all, or else just barely touch on the tiniest part of what I would like to be able to do.

Again, thanks a ton for the replies folks, it really is appreciated.

As I say everywhere I go... destroyers, cruisers, battleships... all a must!

I'm obsessed, what can I say?

But should you add them, one must deal with the issue of asteroid fields, and how easily the large ships get B****-slapped around by a random coke can in space. That's my 2-cents.

Don't worry about being irritable, but remember, despite the large amount of people doing things here, it's not hard to overlook a thread. Chances are, alot of folks would be interested, they just havn't gotten around to it yet. You know the saying "So much to do, so little time."
