Editing existing Freelancer ships

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to work with the 3D models of the ships included with Freelancer?

I use the Border Worlds Dromedary Freighter, and it appears there are a few hardpoints markers that are not being used. If I could load the model of the ship into 3dMAX or Milkshape, or some other 3D editor, I could get the cooridinates of those hard points and enable the by editing the appropriate .INI files.

However, I'm having trouble figuring out how to open or import the CMP files, which I'm guessing are the 3D model files.

Any info that anyone can offer would be most appreciated.

i used UTF editor to add some hardpoints
takes some time to get the coordinates
