Umm... Why is my ship so small?

Umm... Why is my ship so small?

I've created a ship, beautiful model. I have no textures yet, so I just gave the thing bland white textures just to get it into the game to be sure the model works. Well, it does, sort of. The thing is no small that it could fly up Trent's nose! You see a tiny engine flare (about 5mm on a 1024x786 screen) and a whole bunch of weapons glued to the engine flare! My model's current poly count it something like 120, and I'm guessing it should be higher, but I don't know how high is high enough (want it to be about startracker sized). Does anyone know how many polys the ship should have?

You used milkshape right. Well try selecting all groups and scale it. Most of my ships needed to be 100 times biger (10x10). So try doing this than get back than try flying.

OK, I just found it really funny to have a collection of weapons and an engine flare glued together without a visible ship. I figured out that you could see the ship, but you have to remove ALL of the weapons. I'll try your suggestion. Thanks

Umm, now that the ship is bigger I find that it's upside down... What's up with that? My ship is right side up in Milkshape, do I need to invert it then export it again? Or is it something with my model?

edit: Forgot something. My ship turn invisible, except for the engine flare, when I enter cruise. I don't even have a clue as to what's causing this...

Had the same probs. Scale up you're plane in milkshape. A lightfighter should fill the intire left vieuw screen in its leged at the maximum zoom :S

Btw: build the model and turn it 180 degrees should help

BAH! That's WAY too big, the thing looks like an elephant on steroids! You sure this is going to work? Ok. I'll try it in the morning

Milkshapes X,Y,Z planes seem to be opposite to the games if you turn your ship upside down in milkshape and facing down (in the bottom left view) that should sort it out.

With the control Yoke in one hand
and the throttle in the other. live for the day for tomorrow may never come

So as long as its upside down and I'm looking at the ships' butt in the front view of Milkshape I'm ok?

Lol, suppose this is a milkshape, or a MS bug?

thats pretty much it yes, not sure if you know about the textures but they may need to be flipped top to bottom to show up right. as for a bug hmmm not sure about a bug just different co-ordinate systems.

Ok, so the ship is the right size now. Problem is that the stupid weapons are all pointing down, or straight up! My hardpoints are on/in the model and they are all level with the x-z plane. Should they face the way the guns are supposed to aim? Or should they be just outside the model? Both?

Also, my cockpit is a different texture than the rest of the ship, and the piece of the cockpit that sticks into the main body of the ship shows through now and again. I was wondering if I need to make one big texture for the whole ship, or should I just move the piece of the cockpit?

Fixed the cockpit, now all I need is the hardpoint things and, of couse a proper skin. Anyone interested in doing this (it kinda looks like the Pyro GL from the Descent series) please reply here and I'll send you the model.

I've fixed 2 of the hardpoints by repositioning them, but the other 4 still point (and shoot, for that matter) straight up! I've taken them completely out of the model (they sit just off the model) but no change really aside from better positioning. Is there something I'm missing here? A setting in Milkshape? Something in the UTF?

Second thing is that I can't mount VHF shields. I've set the hardpoint in the ini file to be lvl 10 compatible, and it is, but only for LF shields!

Also added another thruster (total of 2) and I can't mount anything on the second one. Do I need to play with an ini file to get this to work? Or is it just another little thing I've missed?

Oh, and my offer still stands: Anyone who wants to texture a ship that looks suspiciously like the Pyro GL from Descent, feel free to contact me and I'll send you the model (as long as you send texture files back )

to set vhf shields you must make sure that your shiparch.ini has it's shield type set to elite_shield rather than fighter_shield, then you should be able to equip the heavy fighter shields

Ah, thank you
