Lights, the Equipment Dealer, and You (Questions)

Ok, so I was thinking (then doing, then failing), running lights mount to hardpoints. Guns mount to hard points. Guns mount to running light hardpoints. Therefore, lights must be mountable to gun hardpoints. Check.
Guns can come ready on a ship, as can lights. You can also buy guns. You can't buy lights. Let's buy me some lights! No check.

Lights are defined differently than guns (no !@#$, Sherlock!), much differently. But they're in a file called light_equip.ini. So I tried to see if you could buy and mount them on your ship. No dice. I figure the problem is with the fact that lights are very simple in their definition, whereas other equipment can go on forever with their parameters.

Has anyone thought up a way to fix this? Buying custom running lights for your ship would give it that personal touch. The DA guys were at one point quoted as saying that they want the ships to be player avatars, but with each kind of ship exactly the same, then they don't really work as such. Personalised running lights is just a little tweak to this, but would be a cool addition to the game. I'm gong to keep plugging away at this, but it's probably hopeless.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make running lights buyable, I'd *LOVE* to hear them though.

Stop trying to rice up your FL ship!

I bet you drive a Honda equiped with a fart cannon and about 10 fog lights on the front of it.

;P

Rice it up? Huh.
I don't know if you noticed, but you can already put whatever lights you want on the ship. I'm just hoping to figure out a way to make it more dynamic. Qutie frankly, I'm failing (it's probably not possible without some major dll hacking, at the least) and don't need to be told to stop "ricing" up my ships. Thanks for nuttin'.

I don't see why this is unimportant. This is just the sort of thing all of this is for. Personally I like as much customization as possible.

what we really need is a nice, user-friendly util. where you can load the skin of any ship, spray it/customize it/scribble all over it etc. and then re-apply it to the ship, without the new skin replacing the skin of every other ship of that kind in the game. Is this possible or is my total ignorance of modding showing thru?

Firstly, I'd like to appologize to Zulu. I was a little sharp tongued with my reply last night, due probably to being awake for a good 20 hours, with four of those wasted on this thing.

Secondly, to Nomega: From what I understand, it's both possible and it isn't. You can clone a ship and simply give it a different skin, which you've gangsta'd up. Unfortunately, since the ship would have to have a different nickname, you couldn't use it in multiplayer unless others had the same ship/skin combo. By the looks of things, the game doesn't really support tagging or tatooing, hence my attempts to buy and sell running lights. As has been pointed out many times before, this is a single player game with a multiplayer option. It seems you can customize your game up the ying-yang, but you cannot customize your ship for anyone but yourself. *sigh* I hold just a LITTLE bit of faith that the FL community will be large enough to warrant an expansion with increased and improved multiplayer support, though I'm not holding my breath over it.

well, i have to say, i have no interest in MP, as i live in the-middle-of-nowheresville in UK, so i havnt got adsl yet and am still stuck with 56k (in the industry this is referred to as a 'bummer'), so MP is unbearably slow for me. SO i dont mind if its SP only that you can edit ur ship in. However, my knowledge of modding is tiny. In fact its so tiny that next time i bump my head and wipe out a few hundred brain cells, i wont have it anymore :-p ..... so:

are there any tutorials about re-skinning ships

or

are there any ship editing utils where i can go crazy and respray my anubis a lovely shade of magenta?

any help much appreciated

Hrmm.
The lights come up as being mounted, but they won't unmount, and when I sell them, they don't appear in the equipment dealer's menu...
Anyone have any ideas on this? All input is highly welcome

you can add lights onto weapon hardpoint
for e.g.

go to goods.ini
add this line

addon = SlowSmallGreen, HpWeapon01, 1

oh, and one more point. you can make lights buyable
but i do not recommend anyone to do that.
