What''s a normal ship polycount?

How many polys should I aim for if I make Freelancer models? Just wondering.

*bump* I couldn't find anything clear on this, I did search. The closest thing said "under 3000 polygons."

As a general rule the lower the better most of the models i have created for FREELANCER and STARLANCER are below 1000 polys this seems to be a good guide for most games.

Yedan is right...
Of course, you can make much more detailed crafts (3000+ polys) but you'd better use LODs then...
I don't know what's the average polycount for a ship in this game. Maybe HCl or somebody else who studied the 3D format knows that...

have you been on line with those ships yet? cos i think you will find that the slow down will be quite considerate, plus i dont see why you would need a poly count of 2000 for that i could build a capital ship worthy of a hollywood film. LOL

Ehh, I kinda doubt that, the ISD in RS2 had 30,000+ poly's, and even that wasn't movie-quality. Still, I'd recommend using <3000 poly's, or do a heck of a lot of LOD work.

no havent been online with them yet
why would i want a 2000 0r 3000 poly ship lol easy more detail better looking add high res texture/s looks really good

Thanks for the info. The model I'm making has a little less than 2700 right now.

The official models from DA vary in face count, but as a very rough estimation, the single seated, player flyable crafts have ~about~ 1000 polys. Of course, the larger things like transports, battleships ect. have more.

T448 ... out.

Hey dr dell. Can you create ship textures and place hardpoints in Milkshape? I've got a cruiser in Max but with my limited experience in Milkshape (plus its not working anymore) i cannot convert it as well as place the hardpoints. If you can could you please send me an email. I will send the file to you then.

hi
well ive only bin using milkshape (or any modeling software) for about 2 weeks so im hardly qualified to do anything technical (hence the poly prob).
also im kinda trying to get the bird of prey and the enterprise done :-(

ive read on these forums that if you uninstall the milkshape trial and clean all references to it our of your registry it will give you another 30 days on re-installation.

or then again theres always..

astalavista dude
