Have Complete WC: Vengance Game, Anyone Want It?

i found my (legal) copy of wing commander 2; vengance of the kilrathi today. the box advertizes "lush 256 color graphics" and "the latest in 3d technolegy". i zipped the contents of the cd (all 39 megs of it) and put it on the internet for download if anyone is interested. someone might be able to salvage a couple of the ships, if they can still find a program that can read it .

for the record, this copy also came with "ultima underworld" whatever that is. it looks like a doom95 ripoff, but one of the screenshots looks EXACTLY (well except for the quality) like the knife that you start out with in the first mission of RTCW, he even holds it the same way.

Ships are stored as sprites in WingII, not models. The best you'd be able to do is extract those using a program like on wcnews.com and use those as (blurry) reference shots.

Aside from that, I can't say that this is totally legal.

Admiral, why did you suddenly disappear from my Hammerhead thread after saying you would do it?

This is off topic, but Ulitma Underworld (UW) and UW2, were first person roleplayers that are basically some of the best ever made in my opinion. Games like Morrowwind are outgrowths of UW, and are not nearly as good. If you can find a machine that will run them, I highly recommend playing both UW and UW2.

maud dib: cause i asked you to pass my your data folder and you never did
zip it and email it to me at [email protected] and ill get to work straightaway.
*edit* just looked thru that thread again, you edited your post telling me that you couldnt send it, i never checked back to see that you had changed the plan. yes i have aim, "elrond jr 1". i am online right now.*/edit*

btw, for those who are worried about the legalities of this...not certian, but i believe origin no longer exists anyways if it does, i would hope the ppl there have something better to do with their time than hunt down ppl who are "pirating" 11 year old software (copywrite is 1992, i have the box in my hand right now, along with the manuals, catalogs, business reply mail and everything)that still runs on dos .

Copyright is copyright, does not matter if the software is 1,000 years old, you will be prosecuted for being a pirate and in some cases The Lancers Reactor can be shut down and owners prosecuted for allowing a software pirate like you making the offer here.

Actually, if the company is defunct and noone still supports it, then it is by default public domain. As in, noone exists to bring said copyright lawsuit. We call this "abandonware."

BUT, I am pretty sure you can still purchase UW and WC series as a "legends" multipack or some such nonsense. I do not believe that they are abandonware. Why not give it to someone for 'value received'. You might also be able to just post data files. If you withheld the exe, then the game is not functional, so you are not pirating it.

Of course, you are then in violation of the license agreement that says you may not alter it, but we do that every day anyway.

Admiral_Tolwyn,

If you bother do some internet searching, you would have found that Wing Commander is still copyrighted.

Because of this copyright, your offering of your entire Wing Commander game online is consider software piracy.

I would just like to point out that the wing commander series has been left alone and out of production for so long that is is now public domain software, and can be found at "www.theunderdogs.org".

I hate you so much my balls hurt.

Whether or not it can still be found does not make it public domain. A copyright is good for 27 years, with an additional 27 if it is renewed. For all those who call it "abandonware" and think that it is legal to just share it around, you're wrong. Perhaps if you contacted EA they'd let you use it, but until then, I suggest you remove that link immediately.

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world:
those who understand binary, and those who don't.

common practice dictates that 2 years after a piece of software goes out of production definitively AND stops being supported by its manufacturer, it pecomes public domain.

prplx,

"common practice dictates that 2 years after a piece of software goes out of production definitively AND stops being supported by its manufacturer, it pecomes public domain."

This shows how ignorant you are. Legally software can become public domain aka freeware if it was shareware. Legally comerical software as long as it is cover by copyright and trademark laws which is several decades is not consider to be public domain.

Since Electronic Arts/Origins still owns the Wing Commander Series, it is covered under United States and International Copyright and Trademark Laws as such downloading that large zip file consitutes software piracy.

*more dramatic music* So everyone who's replying and shouts that downloading it is illegal doesn't got a single piece of illegal games/programs/video/music? If the answer is yes, then I won't believe you. If the answer is no, quit shouting that it's illegal to download this game.

Post Tue Apr 08, 2003 1:58 pm

just as a thought, do you REAALY think anyone is going to care that a few folks download a game THIS old. copyrights or no, if they wanna gripe and moan about "lost profits" and such they should remake the game with todays technolgies. if it was that important to them they shouldn't have killed off origin, and we'd still be getting good stuff from an awesome team. think about what that team would've done with today's graphics and such.<shivers with pleasure at the thought> regardless, it isn't like they are making any money off it anywhere. I know for a fact that there is a store in Orlando that had like 20 something copies of privateer in a stock room before i got there like 6 mths ago.
owner said nobody wanted it because of Dated graphics and such.

The infinite reaches of space are my home. And you'r trespassing.
