How to use a exisiting Sur File for a custom ship?

Dose any one how to link an existing .sur file from a FL ship into a custom ship?

Been fidding around with the .cmp and .3db files and couldn't find a right spot for it. Any help would be great. Thanks all

I *think* you just have to put the .sur file on the same directory as the cmp/3ds file and give it the same name (for example, if you have dralthi.cmp, you should name the .sur file dralthi.sur).

Silly question, but what does a .sur file contain or relate to?

the "collision model" as far as i know. Something like a low-rez version of the ship that is used for handling collisions.
