Incorrect formatting with BiniQDU?

Ok everytime I try and edit an INI file with this program I have to reinstall the ****ing game. I do not understand what is happeneing, but I will try and describe it. Maybe someone can offer some advice..

start out with a clean install.
Go to edit newcharacter.ini
load up the file in biniQDU
change the value of the starting cash to 20000.
save file
start game
Can not make new characters at all.

Now, if you send the INI file to wordpad BEFORE you mod it, it is compressed and not really viewable, right? But after you edit it with biniQDU you can send the file to wordpad and it looks like a normal txt file. So the formatting seems to be screwed up on the file.

When i copy the file back from a backup, i STILL have the issue of not being able to make a new character.

WTF am I doing wrong? Its a simple change! Am i missing some important step or something? has anyone else encountered this type of problem?

y not just edit it while its still in BiniQDU? that may solve your problem

you may be saving wrong: you must go to bini and open the file, then click "save as" and save it as a "ini" NOT "ini and txt"..

the other thing that could be wrong is (correct me if i am wrong someone) but to my knowledge the server must have the same starting character as you. try hosting your own server (Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Games -> SLServer) and see if you can start a game with your modded character file. this will tell you aht the problem is - if it starts fine then its because you have a server-side mod, if it crashes, then you are doing something wrong with bini, or with what you type in.

Another issue to conside is that BiniQDU will cause errors in files if they are not encrypted to begin with, such as freelancer.ini. Make sure you didn't edit one of these other files with it as well. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure that one out.

Ok I will give those ideas a shot.

Can anyone recemend a recovery method that does not include a removal of the game? If indeed these files are out of whack, is there a way to correct them? I even went so far as to install FL to a second machine and copy the files back from that fresh install, but I still have the same problem.

Thanks for all your input!
