"Can''t launch without a power plant!" !?!?!

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

"Can''t launch without a power plant!" !?!?!

I haven't seen this discussed before...

I had an idea: since the engines and power plants are defined in the .ini files for each ship, why not make [Good entries in "goods.ini" for every engine and every power plant. If this worked, you would be able to mount a Sable's power plant and a Rheinland gunboat's engine on a starflier...

I started with the power plant and engine i had added for the Horus (MY modified Anubis). I made them goods for sale on my test station. When i left Manhattan the engine showed up in my inventory! The power plant didn't...

When i got to my test station, the engine AND the power plant were for sale.
I bought the power plant, and the mount thingie showed up on the icon. I clicked, it mounted. Where was my old one? Disappeared into the void. But the new one worked, and stayed in my inventory list. I bought the engine, unmounted the old one, mounted the new one, and it worked. But when i tried to get rid of the old one, the menu said: you can't sell your engine. I bought 3 more, and i couldn't sell any of them...

When i tried to launch with the power plant unmounted, I heard the nice-lady-computer-voice say "Can't launch without a power plant!" Tried with the engine unmounted: "Can't launch without engine!"

So it looks like its possible to, say, make every engine and power plant available for sale. The MAJOR bummers are:

You can buy a new engine, but you can't sell the old one.

With a new ship, the power plant is invisible. You can but a new one, and sell it back. But the invisible one is lost when you change it.

I'm no mod expert; my modified Anubis has only 13 guns. But i would REALLY like any help on this.

Please.

It makes sense. I think that your engine is dependent on the power plant, and obviously you can't fly without a engine. What I find puzzling about this is that the lady has a voice for it, and it doesn't just crash. Did DA originally intend for engine and power plant upgrades?

Lol
This proves that something must have happened during the ending stages of gamemaking... Aparrently there is everything already implemented for mounting/dismounting practically everything and buying every ship(your ship is too big voice).

A few findings...

i tried with a ship that didn't have its power plant or its engine as a [Good. Neither power plant nor engine showed up in the inventory. But when i went to the base, i bought the modified engine & thruster. Both mounted. Both worked. The original, invisible, power plant & engine both disappeared.

Started thinking:
What differentiates a power plant form an engine, since both look like they can be installed on any ship?
What about scanners?
What about cloaks? (I HAVE read the threads, it doesn't work properly either, maybe related?)

God I want this to work...

The engine and power plant are 2 seperate entities. The engine is in engine_equip and the power plant in misc_equip.

I know that, those are the files i modded

Actually, i think the difference is that engines have hardpoints: HpEngineXX, while power plants are "internal".

But that wouldn't explain why you can't sell an engine.

By the way, it looks like ALL the power plants have infocards! No description, but the stats are there. Use the ids from misc_equip.ini. The engines all have infocards too, but they all show 0 for each value. Time for ResHack...

Well, you may not be able to sell an engine, but you CAN jettison it. Which is a good thing: if i ever got tired of the Liberty Dreadnought engine leaving ripples in space 3 times as wide as my Anubis, i can get rid of it.

Anubis + Liberty Dreadnought engine = fun! (0 to 990 m/s INSTANT without cruise engines)

Try TobMaster MOD it has 7 powerplant and 5 engines already to go. Infocards, icons, buy and sell them. He did alot of work; he claims they all work correctly (make sure your ships original is either loadout to have none original or that powerplant will may get in way). it is in download section.

I got the Tobmaster mod, it's good. It works quite well. In fact, it's the inspiration for what i'm doing. That mod was the first i ever saw with scanners, power plants & engines.

But what i want to do is make every fighter engine available on the market. That way you can try out every possible combination.

so where is this mod

Post Sun Mar 30, 2003 3:14 pm

Yes, a link to this mod would be nice, if it is done and ready for dling that is.

BTW, the power plant upgrade must have been removed near the last stages of game development, in early reviews, and demo vids, it was mentioned.
