Why didnt anyone ask Microsoft/Digital Anvil?

Why cant anyone just contact Microsoft/Digital Anvil and ask them how they did it/ if they can release modding tools. It would make things easier and everyone will be happy, thus Microsoft would get more profit because Modding extends the game life. so why didnt any ask?

The team @ digital Anvil have said on interview that they are more than confident that the modding community will be able to create the needed editors to mod the game.

And seeing as the game has only been out for 20 days i htink we are doing very well

Yeah, but it is literally a thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters... Well, keyboards in our case, but the modding community really literally brute-forces its way in modding early on. It's more than a little clumsy except in the exceptional cases. I'm hoping that someone will read this and say, "Okay, we'll throw you a frickin' bone," and allow the modders to break the hard coded stuff without weeks and weeks of studying code like archaic scrolls.

With people who are doing all this scripting and programming programs to make modding usable for lowly pea-brains like me, we're really lucky. I think I won't need to name those people because they author every other topic in this forum and put out three versions of programs a day... However, people have been working at it ever since the full game was near release, with the demo and even with (dare I mention it) W4REZ3D versions and betas...

Call me impatient in light of all the progress happening now, but how many working mod teams are there out there now for Freelancer, compared to a game that has modding tools released for it early on or has no encryption and minimal hard-coded information? It's just doing well because some code and programming geniuses are plowing through so much script. Anyway, there's a bunch of people who probably have their own opinions and suggestions so I'll spare you more uncreative words.

I am very impressed with this modding community so far.

I believe only NWN has it beat, and only because NWN was totally designed for modding.

Don't you guys reckon modding in itself and the process of discovering are part of the fun? I finished the plot, got myself to level 38, and I just got started modding this game. The modding process itself is like giving this game a second life, and I'm looking forward to at least another month or two spending my leisure time testing and discovering. I rather suspect that the way they "encrypted" the plain text ini files is because of this. It will stop the too-casual modders from releasing too many junk mods, while not getting in the way of the serious modders. You get your fun for "defeating the system" and building your own "ultimate craft", MS gets extra customers because of the extra fun factor which costed them nothing to develop and ultimately more $$$. Everbody's happy.

i do think they have completely looked over modding in most stages of making the game

The NWN editor actually did rawk an editor like that for freelancer would be asking far too much :p

I think that this modding community is doing exceptionally well. It has not even been a month and a lot of great work has been done.

Maybe just me but modding this game seems easier then NWN.

I hope the mod community can figure out how to create missions or your own storyline.

That would really extend the life of this game.

yea, I don't know any programming languages at all(besides the all knowing HTML, LOL) and I only know how to 3D model in Lightwave 3d and Texture in Photoshop. What I am getting at is that most of the games I personally have modded the hell out of had there own modeling plugins that the company has created.

I appriciate what the community has built so far, and I bet they're getting a whole crap load of experiance in this which is a good thing. I just wish for some Official tools to make things abit better for everyone, like make a imp/exp of there models files/w the sorce code for the models.

Well I guess DA and MS are happy and we will have to be patent while the masters here in this community work things out I will have to learn how to prgram for Lightwave too. Well If anyone knows what Digital Anvil used to create their models It would help alot. I want to add my slave 1 in

That said, I have noticed that there are still parts that the modding community have not worked out yet. Would it not be better for them to provide details on the structure on the files, what everything means so that we can focus on the tools and not trying to guess what everything does?

Dude you gotta remember game has only been out 3 weeks

The first stage in any modders community is to bit by bit crack open how do do the needed bits and pieces then people can write apps around the info & formulas we have come up with this is actually much more intresting than just using someone elses tools, because from doing this we can expand our knowledge on the inner working of the game, each step takes us closer to our goals.

After all how well can you know a *game* until you have pulled it to pieces and rebuilt it for yourself!

Replace *game* for "Car" in my old mans case and for "Concorde engine" for my bro -God rest his soul.

We are still at the stage where we are hacking it open to find out how everything works. We are definatly getting there.

After my dll info, i am now gonna work on importing new ship meshes into the game(random email gave me that idea for my next project lol)
