Been there done that but docking was hell so i gave up. New developments might mean that i might be able to solve the problem.

Wanderer, the Mod Manager/Installer program now has a add-on thingy that makes docking rings no longer a problem.
Although I guess space stations would still be a problem

I've a clue that may solve the docking to stations thing but that would limit you to docking to cap ship capable stations only. More realistic but more limitations though

I think the limitations would be just fine. You want a big-ass beast of a ship, you'll need to dock at a space station. You don't see them landing those beasts on planets in the game, do ya? :p
personally, I'd rather they did away with the docking rings. Too unrealistic, considering the angle it requires you to land at(in reality that 90 degree angle would cause you to burn up like a roman candle)... I'd much rather have it come in at an angle, a'la space shuttle...

Success. The clue worked thanks to CptKazo for giving me the clue. I'm currently working on giving all stations and battleship prioirity cap ship dock points that will solve many of the issues for docking. Only problem is that docking rings are still used for planetary ladnings.

That is the point of a docking ring, to negate the angle needed to enter the planets atmosphere. Also manic, theoreticaly it is possible to make a "Docking RIng".
