Dude, i don't care where you come from or who you are, but if anyone loses to hovis, that person is strange. You go to cruise, and stay in cruise. No fancy flying, or anything like that. Just steer well and you should win, if not, tell me. I'll help you mod your thrusters so that you go 500 or more.

i agree

Give me a good thruster over cruise anyday.

for all newcommers to the freelancer game if you fail at racing hovis try to remember the last stretch has a slight twist in it that DOES catch players out it is easy to say that it is easy to do .But if your new it can be pretty hard and so easy to catch you out patience will carry you through .

I've lost to him both in regular SP and modded SP. Yes you can loose to him. For all of you who have "never" lost to him, good for you. For those of us who have, we might even be annoyed by having to race him. Like me. Would have liked to face off against 3 dreadnoughts than race the guy.

He is easy to beat if your pc is over 1 GB fast and has 256MB of memory

Also, if you do lose, reload your game, there is one sequence that when you do fly against him, he goes way off course about a third of the way through. From that you just have to hit those rings and ignore the fire coming in.

Above all else, if you find yourself getting frustrated, walk away from it for about 5 to 10 minutes to cool down, the frayed nerves don't help much...

Shoot first, shoot straight, win always.

It isn't so hard that u need a mod to get past it, i'd never played it before and i was using a cavalier and i did it first time, all u have to do is keep your cruise engines on all the way and literally just miss the hoops as you go through them

I think why people keep losing is they may forget they actually have cruise engines, even though a massive window tells you

Folks,

I have gone through the whole story and i have got only one qdvice on hot to beat this freak. Yes, I can not beat him and yes I have tried about 30 times to do so, but I end up missing one ring at the end. Can anyone please tell me where to go to increase the speed or where to het that mod or something to skip the task or go through it dast.

I did it third time on umodded. I did it one time on DP mod v1.0 (the mod that lets you fly freighters) and that time i was in a CSV! My tips are:
1. keep calm. Go on a different game to calm down.
2. assign your cruise to a one push key like 'Q'. That makes easier to start.
3. Ignore Hovis. He is an idiot anyway.
Hope this helps.

I have raced against hovis numerous times, and have won most of them. however, when i win, the mission log says waiting for mission objective, and I can neither leave the system, or dock on anything in the system. when trying to dock, it merely says dock denied, and I am able to do nothing.

I have the next gen 2.5.6 mod installed into the game permenantly, and if I'm remembering right, this was the reason i quit playing it b4 in singleplayer. I have missed this game, and so reinstalled it. My system is an athlon xp 2400+ @2060 mhz, with 1 gig of 3200 ddr and an fx7600 gs 256 meg video card, and it runs bf2142 on high graphics. so that is not the issue. The operating system is xp pro with all the current updates, running the game in compatibility mode for win2k.
once when i lost the race, due to my wife calling me into the kitchen for a feed the dogs emergency, it actually let me rerace him. everytime that i win, no turrets fire at me, or anything of the sort, and i get a screen like it wants to run a video or something then i just resume flying, and cannot land or leave the system. I would really like to get this resolved. If it will help, i will reinstall with no mod, complete the race then reinstall the mod. any other thoughts would be appreciated.
I have seen several other ppl mention this same problem throughout this thread, but no responses in reply. also noone who posted about this prob has come back to say that they got the situation resolved, or how. I would really like to move on in this singleplayer version.

it could be the mod you are running it might have a bug or something. usually its the mod thats causing problems.

Post Tue Apr 10, 2007 4:53 pm

ok. well here's a question. If I uninstall the mod, and go with vanilla FL, can I still use the savegames from the mod, and continue on from the race, or will I have to start over?

Post Sun Apr 15, 2007 1:15 am

You can keep the saved games if you have vanilla ships with no edited or changes. If you're using a modified or added ship, your game will crash when you first load it.
