*** SPOILER *** How to beat Hovis

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

SOme people have crappy coordination or just suck at racing games, like me. I lost 3 times before I tried with a lightfighter (i had a crusader earlier). I then went back and beat it with a crusader using the same strategy: Follow the waypoints, stay inside the rings, use cruise engines(duh!), and when Hovis screws up (its scripted), youu will have the upper hand instantly. WHen the platforms fire on you, keep going, they usually can't hit you (and if, like a normal pilot, you have a shield, they shouldnt do any permanent damage). AFter that, you wiN! Also, try the mission with a LF first (u can get 1 on the Hood, battleship), because its alot easier to manuvere with.

I've said this before, but for the benefit of someone who doesn't have time to read through reams of old posts... The best advice I've heard about beating Hovis is to switch to cockpit view. You have to do it before you dock with the Hood to look for Hovis in the bar.

IMHO it's a lot easier to fly through the gates this way. Stay to the inside of the gates, use cruise all the way, and you can't lose.

I have never gotten up to hovis because
a) My game keeps crashing and somehow - in the process - It deletes my saved games aswell
b) I put MODS on to counter the first problem and find out that the hovis mission has gone, and
c) I just too *insert expletive of your choosing here* lazy

I dont know how can someone have problems with him... I was clearly leading the race after maybe half of it.

everyone, i think we sould all stop asking ourselves why others cant beat it

i said ths before:

"If you are a good player and piolot you can beat hovis unless you or your game or comp screw up.

I do understand how some people couldnt beat him. Personally my dad is okay on most games but when he has to do somthing different like racing in a shooting game he freaks out and loses (seriously its true)

mini games like races change from the normal routine of fly streigt, shoot, kill, flee, of the normal random missions and freak some people out. and sometimes these people need help"

i hope this clears things up

"If im phased and can walk through stuff, then why am I not falling through the floor?"

EDIT: oh my my keyboard is screwed up... fixed errors in spelling

Just something I haven't seen - after Mission 5, you are level 10. This means that you can go north from Leeds, through Tau-31 and Tau-29 to Kushu, and pick up a Drake Light Fighter. You might want to do a few missions against the Outcasts to make sure that the Bounty Hunters are neutral before you set off.

Ok, it's a bit extreme just to beat Hovis.. but on the other hand, the Drake is much more fun than than a Crusader or Cavilier. And the turning should help a bit in the race.

I had a bit of trouble the first couple of times I raced him because it was new. But I just kept reloading and after the 3rd time I got him. And I was only playing the game for two days at the time. So it is not rigged to be that difficult. It was kind of pleasant and fun really.

Of course shooting was uncool, I do plan to go back to the Hood someday and see if I can find him again now that I am finished with the storyline. If he isn't there at least I should be able to mine some gold.

he wont be there, plan on minin gold

pratince when you enter dublin before you go to the hood

Post Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:59 pm

i still don't have a clue how it is possible to lose to him. All you do is give him an 'accidental' bump at the start and you have no problems

Post Wed Jul 27, 2005 4:29 am

Well i cant beat him, i'll tell ya why, because he crashes into hoops and dies so at the end when i complete the course, he doesnt say `go back to the hood` or watever. I have completed it in the original and now i have freelancer TNG 2.6 PLEASE IS THERE ANY WAY TO AVOID THIS PROBVLEM AND SKIP LEVEL OR SOMMINK?

turn off the mod

"If im phased and can walk through stuff, then why am I not falling through the floor?"

I have never used a mod. Don't have a real powerful computer, but have never lost. So it does seem the mod is what is causing the problem to me.

The best way to beat hovis:

1. Use a light figheter or a heavy fighter with a decent turn

2. Make sure engine kill is off

3. Start your cruise engine immediately

4. Fly in mouse flight. Don't use the computer

5. Turn the grafxs down for less lag

6. Make sure you have as many sheild batteries and nano bots as possible

7. Do NOT dodge the shots from the weapons platforms. Use your SBa and NBs

I used those tips and beat him in a crusader

I beat the bloody crap outta him every single time. Just keep to the inside of the rings, and ignore the weapon fire at the end. He's screwed.
