TLR going to Console only

I have been told and have seen posts on different forums around the web that TLR is going all consoles because that is what MS is pushing for in the gaming world.

My understanding is that in the future PC gaming on TLR will be gone for good. Does this also mean a name change as well?

What is really going on here at TLR?

Nope, not true. We are, at this time, only covering one consol game. It is said to be wide open in terms of going where you want rather than being linier(sp). When we can get another game, we still will be looking at PC games but hopefully moddable ones as this is a modding community.

wow. I never saw such hoakie around here.

Suprised that MS is going "Console only", some of their biggest games are non console games... and even their biggest is coming to PC as well

As always, you should ask people for a source when they say things - seperates out the truth from the made up things

Please list all the forums you have seen this information on. Everyone else too. Spreading uninformed nonsense like this is what will kill the site long before the game itself dies.

the problem are not those other forums
the problem is that LR does seem to see the need to inform about upcoming changes

that LR does only cover console games is just a rumour but lets face it... LR decided to cover mass effect giving no explaination about the "why"
the biggest part of this community has mixed feelings about it
especially since in the past every possible games for LR were talked to death and the fact that no other game is on the way

at the moment you announced to cover mass effect and at the moment ppl realized that besides this game nothing else will come the numbers of visitors here at LR dropped by 15-20% while before the numbers were stable (more or less)
not to mention that changes might come that many ppl dont like

to cover an xbox game is not really what PC gamers like but its also nothing bad (in case you have other games too)
I dont think the game itself or the fact that its a console game is the problem
the problem is how information are handled

->
"ok guys we support Mass Effect now"
1 week silence
2 weeks silence
2 months silence
"ok now we post some basic info about the game"
<-

the community expected a bit more in my eyes
and explaination why a console game was choosen
detailed information
exclusive stuff
interviews
trailers
previews

but instead the players (which actually dont understand why this game is supported while other games are talked to death here) were left alone and all the questions (comments on the news) have been kept un-answered

not to mention that many players miss the point where someone does tell them how the future of LR (and therefore their own future with online gaming) does look like
i remember a LR staff meeting that i left before it was over... a meeting where i mentioned that all big plans and new games wont help if there is no real concept behind everything
you made the decision to do changes... to support that console game... but you left many questions open and usually communities want questions to be answered

news... is it normal that a community covering so many (PC) games has no news for the players? News posted just once a week? I mean LR has such a big staff... people start to ask whats wrong here and if the rumours are true... no news about the console games... comments such as "stuff has been filtered out before posting news" (ive read something like that here at LR about 2 weeks ago)

plz dont take that as complaining or bad mouthing
its not meant this way
sorry if someone feels offended by my words
i just want to point out where the problems might be and if you compare the LR that we have now with the LR we once had with all the information, news and community support you will see that there is much truth in what i just said

I have already added a download for Mass effect that have gotten a number of hits. As to News posting. There is little coming in at a daily bases, only a lot of spam to be deleted. The rest is saved up for 3-4 for posting.

Then I suggest an official Q&A session be arranged where community members can meet with us and find out what is really going on and whether they should be concerned or not. This should take place on IRC, in a location we will have to come up with.

As far as a drop in site visitors.. a lot of that has to do with the fracturing of the Freelancer community that has been going on for the past two years. Many mod teams and servers have their own community sites now and have separated themselves from the main community here at TLR. If we want to save the site and the community this problem needs to be addressed. This could be another subject for discussion during our Q&A session.

Also, contrary to statements saying otherwise, our staff is mostly just two people right now. And of those two people I have so far only had the time to do some coding on the site to fix features like the thread moving code. So right now we have virtually zero capacity to post news that is not sent to us, and we receive very little legitimate news.

Therefore, it is not going to console. Got that one straight.

However, it is just that any news that you all feel is not news or a good mod might not be posted? That is what I seem to read with the last few Admin posts.

Where Is BP?

Things were different when he was here.

I have been here a few years and hate to see TLR going down hill like it has in the past several months.
Something needs to be done to bring it back to its old self.
I am sure if you as for volunteers to help with the site many would come to help.

We are currently posting all legitimate news that is sent to us. The rest is spam. We get very few news submissions from the community.

BP is off on one of his work trips and will not be back for some time. Eraser, Akataka, and myself have been left in charge. We also have a couple other admins and moderators, but none of us have the time to dedicate to the revival of this site. We have been asking for help from the community for years and have rarely received even a response. Of those that do respond less than 1% ever become useful to the site.

If you want to help then email me with a description of what you can do, are willing to do, and have the time to do.

@FlyByU
I got your news item, and I also got your second request to hold off posting it. If anything has changed, please let me know. The "Spam" is just that. Nothing to do with Freelancer or the other games, at all. News is just declining is all.

the Q&A is a good idea
you should post it to the forum so everyone can read it

im not 100% sure what the difference with the FL communities is to a few years before
i mean... since FL was release the community always was spread
freelancerfan.de
station-network
lancerhq
lancernews
....
....
....

its not different today... except that LR has lost its position as number1 source of information and knowledge in some areas (just in some... LR is still the most complex site for FL)
what i notice is a specialization
LR covers mostly mods
other communities support clans more
others support SP questions
others are supporting tools
and then there are communities which are more interested in offical lancer news

that the workload is massive here at LR is something i can understand better than anybody else
but i doubt that you can expect that ppl volunteer to help LR if they dont know what the future plans are for LR... or if they dont know what is expected from them

sometimes a clear statement about the situation is better than to let ppl guess
"thats the situation with LR now"
"that are the plans for LR, and thats the concept behind everything"
"that is how we gonna turn those plans to reality"
"and now we need your help"

you would be surprised how many ppl would volunteer to help if they know for what they need to work

Post Mon Oct 15, 2007 6:23 am

I would be glad to help anyway I can I have a lot of free time on my hands as well.

Problem is I might not know how to work the site. Maybe start me off with something like learning to post the news and such. I am willing to learn if you are willing to teach.

I'd think you'd be best off asking for specifics - people who can code in asp, work with databases etc. I do remember lots of meetings and decisions in years gone past, but nothing ever actually occured. Only time I noticed stuff is with SWAT_OP-R8R giving it a go for a while - but from what I see, the TLR framework isn't really up to incorporating other games neatly and tidyly... it'll always be a mash of front page news. Do the cookies even work yet, so you can filter the stuff you're not interested in out?

I'd also try asking those that offered to help before what changed, or made them not take part? Was there anything in specifics that stopped them wanting to take part or help?

Post Mon Oct 15, 2007 11:46 am

LR is living from its news and downloads
the cookies were working... dunno how it is now (meanwhile some of the LR code has been changed for some reason - dunno) but they were never meant to filter out news (but this would b possible)

as for the reasons why other ppl left i can only guess... maybe they simply lost interest or they didnt know what to do (that happens)
I had different reasons which i better dont explain here
