Vista Released

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

finalday, we'll upgrade to vista eventually, but untill they've sorted out all the issues, and PCs come with 12GBs of ram and 16 Core processors, its not worth the hassle. XP (and XP x64) do everything i need them to so far.

...Except DX10 . Although considering DX10 performance in Vista, 't'ain't hordly sayin' mooch.

Post Mon Oct 08, 2007 8:23 am

so? you've been lauding the praises for DX10-enabled cards for over a year now, but neglected to mention until just that DX10 is Vista only! who would abandon a proven operating system for some new hardware, shiny graphics and an operating system that doesn't work?

ok, lots of people with more money than sense. but Vista is the new ME. maybe that one that comes after might be some good (Vienna ,is it called?)

But Taw, Vista does work. It works very well indeed. Even security-wise, is it any worse than XP? It has the same 'firewall' and that bizarre Defender widgit. Both x86 XP and Vista will support most good firewalls and AV will often work with x86 and x64 versions of both. (Though AVG demands you buy the full version if you want to use it on Vista x64.)

Simply usage-wise, it's a vast improvement over XP. They've streamlined a number of interface features and made it so much easier to use that I really notice the difference whenever I use XP again.

but untill they've sorted out all the issues, and PCs come with 12GBs of ram and 16 Core processors

My 2GB of RAM and dual-core (2.13GHz) CPU ran Vista and every modern game on high settings (1280x1024) without complaint (the only exception being Supreme Commander - which nothing runs without complaint and hardly anything runs at all). I can't believe there are still people out there who only have 1GB of RAM and expect to play any game made after 2005.

Word on the grapevine is that Crysis is designed to run on Vista so it will run faster on Vista than it does on XP. I'm not entirely sure how or why that would be the case but that's what I heard.

uses 800MB of ram JUST TO STARTUP.

My XP home sp2 at start up uses 148mb of ram.
Why would I want to go with an OS that requires 1GB just for the OS?

TeT, i don't want a more streamlined inteface. the things i have available to me in XP are what i use regularly. in Vista, every time i want to use them i need "administrator permission" when i'm using the only account on the computer.

how has the interface been improved? its all identical but transparent and shiny.

we're not complaining about the Security, sure, its the same as that in XP (which is worthless, but thats another discussion) the fact is, Vista, so far is exactly the same as XP, with annoying gimmicks like Aero, hardware-destroying services like Prefetch and DX10.

sorta like 98se --> ME. same OS, new wrapper.

a word in Edgewise on Crysis. i've been beta-ing it (AWESOME MULTIPLAYER) the official word is that it will offer identical performance in both XP and Vista in Multiplayer, except in "DX10-Only" servers, where all players must be running vista and a DX10 native card, where there is much more intensive Physics. (destroyable foliage and such)

in the Single player, vista offers no benefits as far as i can tell (full physics available, in other words)

Well heck.

If you want bogged down and slow, rather than Vista you could plunk for
Linux Beryl

It's purrrrrty.

Good old "Beryl" (terrible name though, I had an eccentric neighbour with the same name once). Anyway, a "purty" interface still doesn't help with the DX10 problem however.

I don't like the idea of compiling and other issues Linux has. I have tried it, but for daily use, it doesn't work for me. And, if all plans hold up, by march of 2008, I will be windows free. Leopard, here I come.

Have fun trying to play games on "Leopard", Final .

Actually, I don't plan on planing games on the apple. It will be for other purposes including writing.

Post Wed Oct 10, 2007 2:49 am

there are these things called "pens," FD - very useful for writing, when combined with paper. You can't get the ink refills for computers!

(Esq has had enough rip-taking for the time being - so now it's your turn.

Post Wed Oct 10, 2007 4:28 am

Taw, if you ever saw my handwiting, you would understand. There are days I can't read my own writing.

Not to mention the fact of my spelling.

Post Wed Oct 10, 2007 9:45 pm

Besides, if you bought an Apple pen you'd violate your EULA if you didn't write on their proprietary paper and have your writing erased every time you moved to a different desk...

Post Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:19 am

would that be the famous i-Pen? I could only afford an i-Pencil, and when it broke, I realised how pointless it all was.

however if you went to France, you could have used a Jean-Marie le Pen, but only if you were right handed, and la plume de ma tante est sur la table and all that.
