You can install as many mods as you want. The thing to remember is that anytime a mod is activated (such as Crossfire, TNG, TFL, NQ, etc)
they install new folders into the original game files. Which is one of the reasons people unfortunately overlook when switching from one server to another. They'll get kicked for "cheating" even though they weren't really cheating but simply forgot to make a new and clean install of the game before activating a different mod. You'll also notice that when you activate a mod, others will become "unusable" and the FLMM will let you know it.
It gets messy and complicated especially if you like trying out different mods, not to mention causing your own game to crash because of mod cross-mismatched incompatability issues.
Like you said, play the "Vanilla" game first through the story line (I always enjoy going through it) to get a feeling for the game. It sure got me hooked.
If you run into any problems, let me know and I'll help where I can.
