Background story, well I'm not the one to talk about that but I do believe we still have some strategy guides, tee shirts and hats laying around so that might be an idea to run a contest on Lancers Reactor for the best background story

As far as the mods go there are so many to list. Check out the discription of what the mod has in it on the download page for that mod. There are about 1500 mods in the Freelancer Download Section.
If you plan on playing online multiplayer modified games take a look at the global server list or some of the announcements on Lancers Reactor's front page and pick one that you might want to try, and download the mod that you will need to play on that server.
Multiplayer can be a ton of fun.

And I suppose we should overlook the fact that you had to buy??? a pirated copy of the game since you said that it's not available for sale in China...that's a shame because I'm sure there's a lot of characters that would enjoy the game.
One thing though, you buy pirated software? As in pay with yuan?

So I am playing the mod of nomad revenge II on a Chinese unofficial server now, it is a perfect extension of the original one and gives me a great many brand new funs.

Actually,a private copy's price is up to its quantity(5 yuan per CD).No matter what the original copy's price is,in the field of private copies,only the cost of "hardware"(the CD itself) really counts.

ps:Some of my firend got this game for totally free! They just download it with bit torrent.

I think that you might be right Taw. If the game was never sold in China, then it would certainly explain the lack of members from that area.

i think its pretty justifiable to buy a pirate copy if ms didnt publish the game only goes for 10 bucks now anyways ^^
