it's very important with these HP All-in-Ones to install the software from the cd-rom first, follow the installation instructions on-screen, then attach the interface cable to the computer, usually after a reboot. if you don't, then weirdness happens.

I dimly recall that we got a job lot of these bread-bins in a while back, and there were all sorts of issues with the drivers that came with them, to the point that we just threw them away. Eventually a fixed driver suite came out but by then we'd moved onto something else. I'm not a big fan of HP printers but my boss is and insists on buying the rotten things.

ha yeah it does look like a big bread box! ok i got it fully working last night before i passed out from terminal-boredom, due to reading endless forums looking for this here is the elusive MS recommended registry fix for a disappeared-cd-drive i eventually found, for anyone that needs it

review review review......ok well the 'memories disk' thing is just a dumb organizer. (like i need another? i didn't use my digital-cameras software, why would i use this crapware lol). there is a control app, that just does what a gfx program does (capture, print - yay!) and a third program window that is apparently part of the actual driver. yah, so its crap but the prints are decent and scans are actually perfect (did not expect a good flatbed scanner in a PSC) and the cartridge's are ubiquitous and cheap

based on prior experience with HP printers i think this was a pretty good buy - i mean, it works and doesn't jam with paper, so it's pretty exceptional for an HP huh?

P.S. thanks for the advice but i located that vital little tip in the manual last night..... it says "follow the poster" at one point during the install, i did not realize until my fourth time installing it they meant the 128X32 banner graphic showing a USB connection(i thought they might mean some poster that was not included in the bundle).. uhh, could have just put five words in a dialog box guys 'plug in printer now please' too hard to read for ESL techsupport or what? also, the freakin 'installation tips' chapter is on page 25, and there is no other chapter on installation. sheesh, ok i get it 'plug and play' but how about a big stamp on the front "plug in printer first/last!" ya know? ok..hehe now i'm ranting

its a good idea to get 8-9 hours of sleep before tackling any HP device i suppose

I've never liked their printers much, well they were tolerable before the Compaq merger then just turned into junk. Too fragile, ropey drivers, don't last; and in case you think it's just the nasty cheap home products that fall apart, you should the trouble that we have the network ones when we have to install those JetDirect modules.

However as we have all HP servers and tape nackups, the boss keeps to HP printers because we can shove 'em on the CarePack details so when they die we can get direct replacements - but, he doesn't have to fix them, I do.

I knew that you'd sort it out post-haste, CV - even if it did take you longer than you'd planned. Never give up, never surrender! (do you want a job? I'm getting rid of my padawan learner when I go back to work next week.)

hp seems to do well with it's own peripheral products.
So, when I bought an hp, I stuck with all hp stuff. Never had a stitch of trouble,
unless it was something I mucked up personally during my...
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" phase of computer ownership.

Some advantages with custom made pc's is that you can just about use any
peripheral as long as you have the software for it...
AND
the basic programming is non-combative.

Do what I did. Find someone with a cheap, used, low page count, parallel printer. I have an old HP LaserJet III that has about 35000 pages on it, so the drum is still in good shape. Toner never goes "bad", so I can fire it up and print any oid time I want.

Hohukum that is indeed a nice option - i would like to pick one of those up for PCB print transfering some time, although i read a diy article recently that said you can direct print with ink on the PCB to be etched.. the toner transfer method is a bit more laborious but its better documented for now. anyways, they print faster than an inkjet possibly could which is great for docs it really just depends on the use i suppose.

hehe on a whim i tried scanning and printing one side of a 50 dollar bill, it stopped at one quarter thru at the treasury stamp and printed the url http://www.rulesforuse.org - it turns out that my printer drivers are spying on what i print and blocking images, and who knows what else?

(good idea on the parallel laser printer, I had one for years that I "acquired" and it was, for all my moaning about a HP, a Laserjet 4 - which were really good solid printers until the merger with Compaq.

well i dug out a blast from the past this weekend when i ventured to the deepest catacombs of the garage looking for a plotter, any old plotter and found....an HP 7475A desktop pen plotter! yay and verily, the null-modem-cable adapter was present, and it was good! (of course, i couldn't find even the original driver, let alone an updated HP driver) - i fiddled around with it on and off yesterday and today and finally got it working... now i can start printing my own monopoly money, aka euros

i found some drivers for it from winline.com but they don't list the price up front suggesting it costs something way unreasonable, anyways they distribute a 'demo' driver that prints a watermark after the print (lol...so i just turn the plotter off when its done...grin)- now i need to start working on acquiring the tool-pens for various apps like vinyl cutting, direct etching, PCB trace-resist layout.... my mind is awhirl with possibilities..... perhaps pre-tattooed skin grafts for the pain adverse badass?

p.s. all in all it took me as much time to set up the serial plotter as my usb deskjet.... HP's P'nP has come a long way all right...
