Dell 2407WFP-HC...

As you may or may not be aware, Dell recently released an upgrade to their popular 2407WFP LCD, the 2407WFP-HC. Now the HC model has a number of benefits, however the question is, is it a decent gaming monitor? A 24" that supports 1080i and 1080p (or so they say) as well as 1:1 pixel mapping and a 92% colour gamut is certainly impressive, however is such a monitor worth 999 AUD (including a "Razer" mouse and "Sennheiser" headset)? There have also been concerns regarding the phenomenon of "input lag" and this monitor, which is why the BenQ FP241W is seen by some to be superior in this regard. Is the input lag truly real? It is merely a case of inexperienced users becoming more aware of their cheap mice and lack of mouse sensitivity tweaking, or is a real problem and, if so, how can it be corrected? Then of course, we have the problem of "future-proofing". The monitor does not support "DisplayPort", nor does it support a 100% colour gamut. Hence, would such an investment be wise?

Anyway, the point of this rambling monologue is to ask what people think of the monitor in question (and hopefully how it performs if anybody owns one), as well as discuss the above questions. Thoughts people?

wow, you can get this to work on your 486? your 4mb S3 Virge DX/GX must be really pushing that 640x480 resolution!

you're asking the questions from a relative perspective. Is it any good? of course it is, but is it right for you? is it worth the money? is anything ever worth what you pay for it, esp if you have to buy retail? (fortunately I don't)

imho you'd be better off spending the money on ripping out Typhon's guts and replacing them with some decent kit, rather than splurge wonga on a monitor you could barely use at the moment anyway. what benefit would this monitor give you when you haven't got a graphics card, cpu, motherboard or RAM sufficient for your needs?

hmmm, I don't think that I've ever paid for a monitor! I'm currently using a 26" Mitsubishi RGB CRT that the Reprographics Dept at work didn't need anymore. The last IT purchase in which money actually changed hands was ten shillings for a Molex-SATA power connector (and I resented paying that!)

I can acquire a discount (at least 8% possibly more), and the monitor is just an intermediate step in the Typhon upgrade process. Indeed, having a monitor that cannot be used to its maximum potential would certainly encourage me to upgrade sooner. The only problem is that the 2407 uses a PVA panel, and I'd prefer an IPS. Still, those pesky IPS panels are expensive, and $1500 for the 3007-HC (assuming that I can acquire a decent discount) is 50%-75% of the total price for a relatively decent PC. It is clear however, that my 19" Philips won't be able to "cut it" with a new PC, especially considering the fact that the maximum resolution is 1920x1440 at only 60Hz. Hmm.
