Windows XP activation

The people here are some of the smartest people i know so i post this little problem here knowing some one has a solution.

just had my hard drive fail on me about a week ago. So i replaced the hard drive, processor, motherboard, and graphics card. I am stunned by the performance increase!! But there is one little problem, the activation code for windows XP constantly says thats its invalid, And trust me its typed EXACTLY from the product key tag that came on my computer. I've typed it, my mom has typed it, my girlfriend, her secret lover, the mail man, and my math teacher have all typed it and every time it said it was the wrong code. I want to know if it isnt working beceause i am using a different set of components than what my computer origionally came with (it WAS a gateway back in the day before i replaced everything). I have tried searching through microsft's help and support but havent found anything to help. i tried Gateway but since none of the components are stock from what they sold me they cant help.

If my only option is buying a new XP Copy then could some one tell me about any good deals on windows XP 64bit?

It will take a little doing, but you can contact Microsoft by phone to get it activated. You made too many changes to the system for it to auto activate, but you can contact them to get it activated that way. It will just take some explaining and providing the ID that you were the one that bought it and registered it.

Indeed, you will have to make a phonecall to MS. Ah, the burdens of possessing a legitimate copies of Windows XP are many...

Right you are Esky... the only problem with not registering is that you can't get access to regular Windows Downgrades, Security Breaches, and Disservice Packs...

Using MS's "Technet" service allows for the downloading of critical updates, etc.

you get critical updates whether you're registered or not, and you can most of the others by going to the administrator section on the M$ Update site.

Remember, activation is NOT the same as registration! if you have an oem installation, regostering gets you nothing whatsoever, the only advantage to registration is *technical support* from M$ for retail product only. As most pre-builts are oem anyway, why even bother registering it?
