what''s your combat tip?

I was wondering if any of you have some combat tips for FL. I've been trying out my usual X3 tricks and tactics to see what works in FL. Here's a couple that I've found useful:

* Pulse afterburner. I found in X2 and X3 that varying your speed by large amounts makes you a more difficult target. This works well for me in FL as you can jump from 80 m/s to 200 m/s and back. I found that running the afterburner for a second on and a second off works quite well, I can still keep up a constant stream of fire on the target at the same time. When I'm dog fighting several ships I use this tactic and strafe together, it's easy to hold TAB and A down together and flick between them.

* Listen to comms chatter. When I hear "Acquired my target ... target is blind ... locking on target ... ready to fire" I know it's time to break if I'm low on shield batteries, or there are a large number of enemies after me.

* Careful on first pass. When I'm doing a "kill all enemy ships" the first pass at them is usually from 2 to 4 ships heading directly towards me. In X3 this will get you killed instantly if your keep straight on towards them, so I've got into the habit of running towards them flat out, give the nearest a burst of fire and breaking when at about 1.0 km, then go into a loop and come out behind my target - that's the plan anyway.

* Watch rear turrets. In X3 ppl pay respect to the Nova as its rear turret can strip your shields if you are foolish enough to fly up behind it and keep going in a straight line. In FL I found that the plot Valkyries and some of the heavier fighters have a nasty rear turret and strafing and pulsing the afterburner can help to avoid its fire.

In X3 we have a number of "Combat Guides" - has anyone done this for FL?

I prefer to just keep turning, so no one gets a lock on, if a missle says locked, burner for 3 secs and rapid turn loses it.

1) if your running away and the enemys have cruise disrupter, cut engines and keep of tapping tab, if you do this right you can keep at 200km/perSec for ever.

2) using the hint above you can use this in fights and you will still be able to steer but you will be very hard to shoot.

Cut your speed down to very slow and use your afterburners for speed. When you have an enemy in your sites, hit him/her with everything you've got. You can actually follow better at low speed than full out.

When doing PVPs, first accelerate to full normal speed (80), then hit engine kill. That way, if you're hit by a cruise disruptor, you're not sitting in space in one spot, but continue to go forward. This makes you much less a target for your opponent's mines.

In reverse, to get your opponent out of engine kill mode, fire a cruise disruptor hat him.

When trying to escape, wigle your courser from one side to onther quikly, this makes the enemy's targeting computer usless.

This may sound strange, but- If your on a 'ship kill' mission, DON'T click on one of your opponents! The reason is this: for whatever reason, if you don't use the highlighted reticle, the enemy seems to have a much harder time avoiding your fire. If you've already clicked on an opponent, don't attack that one- instead, attack anyone else and track them thru to destruction- you'll find that the others in the flight will act to protect the ship you've highlighted, and they almost appear to be confused. The other reason is that when you hit an 'un-hilighted' ship, the brackets will turn yellow for a moment to tell you you've hit him, and that makes it a little easier in the long run. Takes a bit of practice, but the results are well worth it, and if you wanna go kill Hessians in an asteroid field (for example) it's an almost invaluable tactic. Also, head into the flight and start laying mines as you go( around 750-500KM) while firing in on the enemy-but watch your shields, and bail if your taking too much damage !!( the 'Wiggle' tactic that NuttyProSciFi300 mentions is a very good thing to do with this, Imho) This can take out a high level fighter on the first pass, making the rest of the job a little easier- not to mention the application of the ancient adage of 'Confusion to the Enemy'...

DO NOT use missles in congested space: the chances of your hitting a friendly are a lot higher- Immmediately turning him and all his buddies a nasty color in your HUD.

Try to choose your loadout so that you can hammer on all types of shields, especially when you're still at a low level- a balanced mix will give you the ability to knock their shields flat quickly, and let you work the hull over sooner

And,belatedly- Welcome to the Reactor! May you, too, grow to enjoy that that 'glow in the dark' look..

I'm really new to the game but i spotted a good tip for missiles if you are having trouble getting cheap/low level missiles to hit.

often when you are chasing a target they will burn away from you, then turn and head back towards you for a strafing run.

If you fire a missle when they are at about 450 away heading towards you it will always hit them as they can't turn aside.

Hope this doesn't count as a spoiler but.......

I make sure to remember wrecks and head for them at first opportunity in game. Tactics are good but if u're going up against high level enimies it's even bettter to have high lvl guns.

red777 - once you've had enough of SP - I suggest some MP on a lively server. There are large servers that play the 1.0 game still - and PvP is the thing that makes this game great. Playing either with, or against, other people is good fun - see if you can hook up with others, and have a blast

A few Tizonas to down the shields. And a Cannonball missile to shred the armor.

One well placed Cball missile can down almost any fighter once it's shields are down.

A Hornet C/D can be used to kill targets who have very little armor left. They're good for firing off that last shot and moving on to the next target

Missiles are good against players who don't yet know the might of a well timed cruise disruptor.
