It seems posts like this have been occurring quite often recently. So I had an idea...

Why don't fanfic writers construct a fanfic and finish it entirely before posting it if its unlikely they're going to finish it later?

Any thoughts on this?

Edit: Oh yeah, and a second idea. If you expect people to read your fanfics, read those of others (hint hint read MINE )

It's not a bad idea.

I'll keep it in mind for my next fic.

Edit: Your second idea sucks though.

I read all fanfics that arent the nomads are back for the eigth time, no offense to those writes but its not my style.

but i generally am 75% done before i release it

I'd rather post in pieces, to get feed back, rather than a whole one. It gives the chance to take it in another direction, if it isn't atracting attention. And, ghost writeing does not help either.

Fd what i think wilde means is write your whole story on your desktop, then release it out.

I understand that, but, what I'm talking about, is writing on the fly, getting feedback, to make changes in direction. Writing all at once then posting, makes it harder, f you want to make changes. As to other posts by people wanting to see more, it would help if they helpd back on the enthusiasom(sp) a bit.

Beta, calm down he just quoted it,he can do that, evryone can

I have to agreee with you partly (DSQrn giving ground, shocking ) there is a thrill and fun to writting a story as you go that gives a zing that prewritten stories dont.

But me being a major and long time writer, not just for fanfics. i would have to say that at least to lay out a story structure and think about your fanfic for a day. My process for writting a fanfic is as follows

Step 1: Daydream about spaceship battles while sitting around on the subway listening to music
Step 2: Taking my idea and thinking about how it could work in a story and how i can make it unquie without making it to un-FL (my past writtings have tought me that hehe)
Step 3 write a rough overview
Step 4: Write the first chapter see how it feels
Step 5 if all is well start writting
Step 6 after getting halfway through the story reading it over making sure things are unfolding as i want them to then putting the first bit to the public.

This probably wont work for everyone, but me being as weathered in writting as you can be for my age i would say it is the best method for me.

Also in responce to your point that if your writting 'on the fly' you can adjust according to feedback. Generally i will talk about my works with my friends they will help me edit it (assuming its finished before release) and then i can change according to that. Also as i release it i can still go to the word doc and rewrite unreleased bits.

But FD, your a smarter man then i and you have logged more airtime (and written some killer things) so you might just be right. (btw me saying that is a huge compliment since i almost never admit im wrong )

But i think we all agree that writting everything then releasing it all at once is not a wise move.

FD I agree with you, its good to release it in bits and pieces and you're much more of an experienced writer than I...

but what happens if you try to write a fanfic on the fly, and then forget to finish it? You just emotionally stimulate people and then leave them hanging. Frankly, its cruel.

Beta 5, quiet yourself and stop your whining. *cough*w*nker*cough

Codename--sorry, its just I'm sick of not having anyone give any feedback about my fanfics whatsoever. That's disrespectful and insulting. If someone takes free time to write something and post it on here, the least anyone can do is say if it sucks or not.

Sorry to be posting so often but i felt it would be good to get this in before stuff happened.

@Wilde Before i begin no-one and i mean no-one hates it when people dont comment on it. Personaly becuase some fan-fics have people raving after each chapter and others have no comments it makes me and other writers feel like ours suck. But i do say but you have to learn to cope with it. Yes it sucks, pardon my french, but whats most importent is that you enjoy writting. And that a writer is gutsy enough to chare what they have is praise for themself

But in general and to all: If you do read it and if you do have the time me any wilde and all writers i may be so bold to say would love to hear what you have to say

But Cheers to all writers and Cheers to all readers

For me personally, I write because I like to. But, feed back, weather someone else likes the stories does matter. If no one did, it means I nead to take it a different way, different topic or what ever is needed to get feedback. As to finishing a story? Well, that is up to the writer, in that they, he or she, has the personal desire to see it finished. True that things, real life, can interfear with it, but, that should not let us stop all togeather. My starwars one is on hold for the moment, but will be finished. Work got in theway and I had been too tired to think about the story. I get a lot of my ideas at work and on the hour long drive home. Tawsburg for example. Another that I put another name on, to see what feedback it got, if no one knew I wrote it, is the crossover one. I wanted to see if with a differnt and new name, it would get a good look at or not.

It isn't far from being finished. Most of the ideas, I mull over at work, then come home and put down on paper as it were. I could do a whole story, with out posting any, but, It would be geared more to my own private taste and then get put into a notebook and forgotten. A lot of my stories, I share with sw and others to get feed back. One story, Tawsburg III was dropped as a bad idea. It had ran its course and could not be kept. It put even me to sleep.

Thanks for the complaments. It was a youg lady in Texas that got me writeing in the first place, just because of some things I had writen her in e-mails. Then I found out that I liked to write. That, is the reason anyone should write, because they like to. You can always improve, change, or modify storys and methods. I can't imagine Stephen Kings first writing were that gooD. He had to have worked at to get what he does today.

Ok, long story. Sorry. Just keep writing, if thats what you love to do.

How so? People have different interests. Different things catch their attention. You shouldn't be insulted if your stories aren't what people are looking for. Just say that they're "over their heads" or something.

Feedback time.

I have read some stories here. Some I leave after a few line, some I read more. A short story, and thats what these are, has to get my attention. It has to inform me of the people, ideas, location, what ever is included in the idea. There are some, that are double spaced lines of conversation. Tha tells me absoulutly nothing. If I see those same lines in a movie, I can also see body lanuage, background, souroundings. It wills in the peices. But a writen story, has to include those things, so my imagination, can see the complete picture, not having to guess what is left out.

Like this to a degree.

Juni headed to the docking area. She had to get back to her superior, but, this contact could help her out of a situation. The bay was cold and dark, as she waited. He had to show, she felt he would be her best chance of success.

She turned to leave as a voice called across the dark expanse, "Hello, is anyone here?" He made it, Good! she thought. She reached for the lighting switches and flicked them one by one. the shadows were replaced by a small starflyer. Trent was walking towards her. His eyes said he was here for a job.

"Have you decided to work for the liberty security force, Mr. Trent?"

"Its just Trent, and yeah, I'm here to see what you have to offer.

Juni smiled within herself. Her instincts had been prove right again, that and the information she recieved from the bartender. The deck plates echoed as Trent walked over to the flyer. It didn't look all that impressive, but, he couldn't complain. His ship, well, lets say it would be some time before it could be replaced.

This said, tell me your story, make me live it in my mind, weather a western, sifi, romance, or whatever stirs your writing desire. This, will then draw more feedback from me and incude a "Not bad at all, please keep it up" As to constructive feed back, that can be given, though I tend to not do that as much. I will make the effort to change that aspect.
