remaking existing textures

I am making a first attempt to remake existing textures for the next versions of our mod.

What I do is the following:

With utf editor I extract the different tga files

Then with gimp 2 I replace the existing textures (keeping the same names)

Then with UTF i import them back into the mat file (texture)

I am able to see my new texture with hard cmp

example of remake of the mystere:

But when I enter the matfiles in the mod, I get a CTD whenever i try to buy the ship...

Can anyone point me in the right direction ???
What am I doing wrong ???

I am a complete noob at this ;-)

it sounds like you have a texture format problem - make sure you export .tga's in uncompressed format and .dds in DXT formats only, usually DXT1.also for the complete noobie the xml decompiler/compiler might work better- it simply extracts all the data in a .cmp or .mat, etc UTF files, then makes an XML file to reassemble them - then you can replace the old textures with the new quite easily and run the reverse XML>UTF program to reassemble it - its also great for items with lots of materials like stations,or utf files or anything really
