I have a ship that I have been working on for sometime using WORLDCraft 3.0 - Yeah I know, NOT a ship modeling tool, but I can make some serious models with it. My only problem is I cannot do it in GMAX - That is WAY out of my reach.

Below is a link to some pictures of my ship that I would LOVE to see built. It is extremely complex and detailed. I have the RMF\MAP\DXF files of the ship saved on my HDD and if you need it for reference, please e-mail me.

USE Your imagination with texuring, I have none. I used Half-Lifes Textures in the pictures.

Specs of SHADOWCAT
SIZE -
Should be 2.5x the size of the Rhino.

TYPE -
Very Heavy Fighter - SUPERIOR Handeling(very high maneuverability)
Buyable at Starting Planet in SinglePlayer game.(New York is it?)
PreEquipped w/ Class 10 Nomad Guns\Turrets\Torpedoes where appropriate.

SYSTEMS -
10000 Cargo
100\100 Nano\Batteries
4 Turbo Boosters (forgot to add 2 of them in the MAIN ENGINES area in one of the below pics w/ hardpoints.

HARDPOINTS -
2 Class10 Gun\Missile
2 Class10 Mine Dropper
1 Class10 Torpedo(OR)Cruise Disruptor
1 Class10 Countermeasure
1 Class10 Turret
2 Class10 Shields(if possible)

FRONT
SIDE
TOP

HARDPOINT LOCATIONS -

FRONT

***NOTE***
In the images with hardpoints, if it says HAS EQUAL OPPOSITE, that means that there is an IDENTICAL HARDPOINT IN THE EXACT SAME POSITION only it is ON THE OTHER SIDE (think symmetricaly).

I`ve been having a go at re-doing the ships from frontier (elite2). I`d really like a bit of an idea with the imperial courier and eagle long range fighers. In the game they are extremerly basic, so the test is how can you remodel them and still keep the original shpe of the ship for fans of the game?
Maybe we could have a contest, either for these ships or for others and see who can make the best looking model?
Also I think there is room for an added ship class similar to the mule. The idea of a hybrid between fighter/freighter for pirates is, for me, the ideal type of ship..

I am an amateur ship-designer, and I do my original ship designs on primarily graph paper and use three D models inside my own head to visualize the finished producted. My question is, Is there a computer program available that simulates the functions of two dimensional graph papergraph paper in an interactive format on the computer?

Good question

The best answer that I can give you is that most good 3D packages pretty much accurately reproduce working with 3-view drawings, plus all of the obvious advantages of 3D. Rhino3D, which is my primary modeler, combines one of the most intuitive interfaces ever designed with a very friendly set of viewing controls. It's very much like drawing, with some sculpting thrown in.

There are other approaches to the "drawing in 3D" approach. I don't care for them, but others have built very nice work with them. These include Zbrush and Wings.

Zbrush is a program where brush strokes are transformed into 3D data. It's a very powerful tool for building very complex models, but isn't exactly user-friendly, and pretty much requires that you own a tablet.

Wings is a subdivision surface modeler, where... essentially, you make less into more. By taking simple primitives and carving and combining them and then subdividing them, you can use Wings to build all sorts of things.

I use Rhino3D, because ... while it's not *exactly* like drawing, it's very easy to use, and the interface makes it very easy to understand what's going on. That, and it's almost ridiculously powerful- things you simply cannot model in other software is usually a snap in Rhino. Plus it has all sorts of traditional CAD/CAM features, if you're seeking to model to a specific scale.

I'd like to congratulate Ryuujin on his rendition of the Arwing fighter from Starfox. It's a very nicely-done model that's stylish without being overpowered.

That being said, would it be possible for anyone to do a version of the Arwing's counterpart, the Wolfen?

The Wolfen isn't quite as sleek as the Arwing, but it's a fairly stylish fighter in its own right, and it has a nifty red engine glow.

hmm if i make a model in GMAX who would i talk to to get it converted to the in-game format?

Can anyone design Battlestar Galactica/Pegasus? tell me if anyone has please. I can't design them by myself. I'm only 12 so...(Doesn't stop me clocking Freelancer
though)

Here's some random ship stats then...

Nanobots/Shield Battery 500
Armour 1000
Guns/Turrets 5/10
Cargo 500

Can you then post an announcement in the announcement forum?

We're working on one, along with quite a few other ships from SG-1 & SG:A.

For now, you can see what we've gotten done so far at our website (link's in my sig).

Better be careful. MGM just killed the Stargate Mod for Half Life 2 citing unauthorized use of their IP so it appears their lawyers have nothing better to do than harrass modders.

Just giving you a heads up.

That is very scary, poor modders.

I begun dabbling in the modding world a little to entertain my mind and keep the old thought processes flowing. I love keeping the creative juices flowing. I have noticed, though, while there is much time and energy poured into the designing and editing of new ships to fly in and fight against, I have noticed a distinct lack of anything concerning new bases/stations. Can new station models be designed for FL? or is that outside of what can be modded?

There have been a number of great stations from Star Trek and (of course) Babylon 5 that I'd love just to see in the game and fly by, even better to dock at. Do any of these exist? - or am I just dreaming the impossible dream (not being a 3D modeler myself I have to have others help me dream).
