** Tutorial ** - Drizzt4.0''s FL Ship Creating Tutorial
Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer
lol i was going to give you the link to the .mat exporter i had but i figured out the problem while writing out a description on what i did with textures... so now i don't need help with the textures turned out i had flipped the textures after i used them in milkshape...that was a pretty stupid mistake...never make that one again

Ok I though I did everything correct ...... turns out the game crashes when I go to the ship dealer in manhattan where i set the ship to be sold at. I turned off the starflier so manhattan is only selling 3 ships. I did everything the tutorial asked me exept build my ship a different way with 3dsmax 8 and with splines. And hardpoints were multi-faced. That still shouldn't be the reason why my ship crashes the game. please help me...
Cus this is were most people are posting thier problems ill post here to!
i just made a thread but as this one appears more @active@ id post here to. ok to the point
i had allready made some ships in milkshape and 3ds max and exported them to game and they are flyable! hardpoints work every thing works fine....untill you go to see the actuall ship, its invisible! i have done everything to fix this, the mat file appears correct, the cmp file is correct, i have even go thru the tutorial 10 times to see if i have missed something, i have also checed my LOD ranges and they are 0,2000 and the ship size is a little bit smaller than a titan.
Any thoughts on this would be highly appreciated!
now im gunna go back and see if i can do it!

hello all.
I encountered a problem installing gmax on XP.
it says something about windows installer (? not working ?)
has anybody encountered same problem ?
I have also a problem with milkshape ver 1.7.9
and the CMP Importer plugin.
whenever I put the importer plugin into milks folder
milkshape crashes at startup
anybody some ideas/workaraouds ?
Thanx.

Can't help you with GMAX as I refuse to have that piece of junk on my PC, I tried it 2.5 years ago and deleted it in under 20 minutes.
The CMP Importer is buggy and has been crashing milkshape since 1.7.7, in your milkshape folder you will find a text file called "buggyplugins", open it with notepad and add msCMPImporter.dll to the list. This stops milkshape from loading the plugin at start up and only loads it when it's needed.
1.7.9 is the last version of milkshape you can use it with as it crashes 1.7.10 with or with out an entry in the buggyplugins file.

So how should I begin working by the tutorial ?

How do you import ships then ?
Any other noob starter idea ?
thank you.

does the plugin work this way ?
what I'm asking is :
can I import this way a CMP file
or will milkshape still crash and burn if I try it ?

You already have milkshape, so use it instead. Milkshape is a far better program than GMAX(or 3DS MAX) for modelling game content as that's what is was built for(Halflife).
Milkshape loads all of the plugins at start up and then adds a shortcut to the IMPORT, EXPORT & TOOLS menus for each of them. The buggyplugins.txt stops the dodgy plugins from crashing MS3D by preventing them from being loaded at startup, the shortcuts are still added and it's these that you use to activate all of the plugins once milkshape is running.

ok,thanks , I got it now.
Actuallly , milkshape loads all plugins at startup , and for some reason unloads them. The plugin-unload process is what's crashing milkshape , so the procedure you described does prevent BUGGY-defined plugins from being unloaded after startup. All loaded plugins are unloaded on milkshape's termination , that still crashes if CMPimporter is present , but at that time nobody realy cares.
Anyway , does anybody know of a manual and / or quickstart guide for milk ?

Milkshapes help file has a tutorial for beginners that I'd recommend you try, it'll teach you how to use the program and let you build a basic aircraft.
This is a link to the tutorials page on Mete's site, iirc there are a few basic tutorials but a lot of them are more advanced.
Drizzt4.0's tutorial is a "take you by the hand (& wipe your butt for you)" type of tutorial, great for GMAX & 3DS MAX but next to useless for every other 3D modelling program. It is possible to use the tutorial to build a ship in MS3D, but it requires some lateral thinking as milkshape (like most of the other programs) just doesn't have the features of GMAX or 3DS MAX, but when 3DS MAX costs several grand and GMAX is thier freebie teaser what do you expect.
