sorry for still remaining OT, but i simply gotta answer this.

How many use your computer?
only me.

I HAVE to have Owner, Admin, and various other user bs takin up space on MY computer.
strange, i have only administrator and my "normal" user. (indeed, in "documents and settings", there are "All Users", "Default User" and my normal one).

And what's with "Links?"
get Tweak UI, there u can get rid of this.

Best Windows my but!
Let me guess...
It's your first version?
Win98SE was their best Windows ever!
And I've been messin' with it since v3.11!
(1989) (Couldn't stand the earlier versions, so I never bought them.)

indeed, i started with DOS
windows 3.11 was neat, but completely inadequate for gaming.
win98se was quite nice, yet it lacked stability and caused quite a lot of bluescreens of death...
(WinME was the worst OS *ever* imho)

All of my old stuff works with it... that, indeed, is lacking a bit in windows xp. but it is more an issue of obsolete drivers than missing compatibility (my old gravis firebird & gravis multipads wont work aswell)

Whatcha mean? No log on?
Mine has an Administrator's account, and an Owner's account, All Users account, Local Settings, Network Settings, etc.
you can activate autologon aswell with Tweak UI.

in short, if you know how to configure windows xp, it is the best windows ever.
more stable, more options, more secure, more possibilities.

Sir Spectre:
The main problem stems from 2 things:
1) I didn't set up anything-XP is doing that, which I can't stand.
2) 90% of my stuff is DOS!
The few games I've got working, I had to make PIF's '95 compatible, just to run the install programs.
BTW-I don't like hidden stuff on my computer...
It's hard to make stuff you want to hide, hidden, without hiding stuff you want to see.

And why, if I'm the only one going near it, do I need any, let alone ALL of that junk?
Each one of those takes up space on MY HDD!!!
Oh, and thanks for the "Tweak UI" link...
I'm really getting tired of having "Links" when I'm looking for files on my HDD!
Really a stupid place to have them!
As to "Blue Screens of Death," I never had that problem.
Once things were set up right, they ran great!
As to "Autologon," why should I have to logon to my own computer?
Yours I might see...
Some company's, I can see...
But mine? Sorry, I can't see MAKING myself logon everytime I want to use it.

TommY_4_life:
Two answers to that question:
1) Still can't get into the new systems, and I need to fix that first.
2) Until I get this POS XP machine working my way, I can't do much else.

I'm working on converting the Orion model now (using a texture I threw together in five minutes, but it'll do for now) and I've run into a small roadblock. Does anyone remember where the weapon placements are? (Haven't been able to play Privateer, since it runs like rotten molasses through my CPU).

Post Sun Mar 21, 2004 8:19 pm

I can't get into Privateer 1...
BUT...
in the hospital shoot-'em-up scene at the beginning of Privateer 2...
They're mounted under the wings,
1 between the engines, and 1 near the wingtips,
on both wings.
And the WC news shows the Missile racks on the side(s) of the cockpit.

Warzog,

Out of curiousity, do you have to ctl-alt-del to login, or are you using the welcome screen?

Warzog - I have read your rants about Windows XP, and I would like to offer my assistance. Can you detail (in dot-points preferably), the problems that you are having and perhaps I may be of assistance. I know that it is off-topic, however I get the feeling that the idiosyncracies of XP are making it more difficult to work on the Mod. If this is the case, then this is a serious set-back!

Also, you mentioned a new computer. From some of the problems that you are having, it sounds like you have a Compaq (or similar) brand-name machine. Is that true?

Post Sun Mar 21, 2004 10:49 pm

bulk hauler:
Nope!
A login screen comes up just as it does for multi-user Win98SE, but unlike Win98SE, hitting ESC does nothing. Have to hit enter.

Esquilax:
You're good!
It's an HP Pavilion. (similar to Compaq)
And YES, it's making it difficult to do the mod, or anything else!
I use a file called "FLspew.txt" to check for bugs in my mods.
"FLspew.txt" is created everytime you run Freelancer. MOD, or no MOD.
It's the file you send to Microsoft when the game crashes.
It's also the file transmitted when you play multiplayer online.

Normally, in Win98SE, "FLspew.txt" is in the c:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Freelancer folder.
In this POS, it's not there.
Not only that...
There's four (4), I repeat FOUR (4) \Local Settings\Application Data\ trees.
There's the-c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Local Settings\Application Data\ tree.
There's the-c:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\ tree.
There's the-c:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\ tree.
There's the-c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\ tree.

Local service is the home for god knows what? Nothing gets filed there, but I can't delete it.
All Users, NetworkService, and Owner get cookies, the SAME EXACT friggin cookies copied 3 friggin times!
I had to put my Start menu in "All Users" otherwise I can't find my programs half the times.
Owner's gets half the internet temp files, NetworkService duplicates them, and All User's is selective, but copies most of them, too!
If you run a demo online, it becomes a shared document in 3 places.

Okay, now...
Can you find "FLspew.txt?"
I've had it show up in several places, and not be there next time, or it'll become a shared document, be outdated, etc.
A real pain in the butt when you're trying to debug a 39.5mb mod!
(39.5mb is the current unzipped size. excluding Perry.)
And using the "Recent Documents" gets unusable after an hour or so of debugging.

About the only things I need is ONE (1) friggin place for files...
Not FOUR (4)!!!
And I used to get several hundred MB of temp files with Win98SE, each day.
Now I'm getting the same amount, but saved to my HDD 3 times!?!!
No wonder people need bigger hard drives every few months!!!
(They're full of temporary internet files!!!)
(and yes, I've limited them to 5mb max, and delete them, and history daily.)

A side note:
Since this POS didn't come with OS disks, which I've ordered, I have to wait 'til they arrive to attempt a complete wipe, and reload of the OS.
Hopefully, that'll solve some problems/issues.
If it doesn't...
I'll get out the ol'e fdisk band saw, and cut my hard drive down to Win98se byte-sized pieces, and just trash this usless XP!

Warzog, it sounds like you have one option left... to save the headache..

Flatten and reinstall.

Make sure you do backups.

And make sure this time when you re-install windows, that you give yourself the Administrator account, name it "Warzog" and then associate no password for logging in.

Windows XP will have only the one user account, and will login just like win98SE.

lvxoccvlta:
Once the system disks get here, I'll give it a try.
Can't do much else... I'm tired of fighting with it!

Update:
The Tarsus is in the mod!
Unfortunately, only the NPC's will be flying it.
The missiles won't fire, and neither will 2 of the guns.
It does have 2 working guns, a working turret, and she is gorgeous!

I had a feeling that it was an HP, of course Compaq are owned by HP, and are now being re-badged. So much for variety . "flspew.txt" appeared for me in my FL folder (C:\FL). When you installed FL, was the "Install for All Users" box checked? That could explain why you can't find the file. I'm trying to simulate a crash so that I can pin-point it. I'll let you know when I succeed.

Regarding "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data" folders, they are system folders holding templates and other data. As they are system folders, everybody has them, as they are a part of 2000 and XP. I have five of them; your four, as well as "Default User", and my personal (Admin) account (the equiavlent of your "Owner" account. You may wish to log in as the Admin (it may already be set to the name "Owner" ) in order to see if that helps.

A reinstall is always a good practice, especially because I assume that the guys at HP installed the OS. They choose the default options which are completely unsuited to many tasks, and make it difficult to personalise the computer. I would have suggested this, but I didn't know that you were keen on the idea.

Finally, the "xxxx's Shared Documents" folders can be removed with a registry edit. I can give it to you if you wish. If there are any points that would like reiterated or clarified, just ask. I working tomorrow, so I'll be here all morning (Australian Time) .

Post Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:13 am

Yeah, the "All-Users" box was checked, but it didn't help.
I get FLspew.txt all over the place anyway.
(BTW-you don't need a crash to get FLspew.txt, it's created every time you start the game.)
Since I don't have the OS disks at this time, I'm holding off on editing the registry.
