A crafty trick

A nice trick I've come across that can be very useful.

Start you cruise engines and when you're speed hit's 300 turn off your engines. You are not in cruise mode but are freefalling through space at 300 and slowing down 1 M every 8-12 secs.

Now how can this be taken advantage off? Well first of all cruise disrupion missiles don't work on you as you're not cruising so you can outrun enemy ship.

You can also turn the ship around 180 degrees and face the enemies chaing you USING CRUISE SPEED.

Now for the ace bit. As the enemy ships are cruising at a constant 300 they slowly catch you up BUT you are not using cruise so....OPEN FIRE!!!

They can't return fire while cruising. Yay!

In fact thinking about it, you could hit them with a cruise disruption missile yourself and watch them fall back.

I'm afraid this trick is already well known in these forums. But a little reminder from time to time can't hurt.

Welcome.

Actually, they don't catch up. It's a bit cheesy to do, but I think the AI is usually confused by "sliding" manuvers. I've found I can most of the time escape the way you describe but even with just thrusters, not cruise engines. It's like they are reacting to the way my ship is facing and not my direction of travel. As soon as I turn to face them and am flying backwards, they start falling behind quickly. It also helps during combat. Just cut your engines and fly on thrusters alone. Harder to target sometimes, but again for some reason the enemies have an even tougher time hitting you.

Don't know if it's been discussed before here, but it seems like a bug to me. Cutting your engines and sliding with someone on your six should be suicide.

Fair enough.

Speaking of suicidal tendencies... Dont you just love it when your enemies line up behind you while your sliding so that all you have to do is to turn around and use your thuster to set course directly at them and blast them to hell. Its just a matter of point and shoot since they are coming directly at you.

Off course this could work the other way round if your enemy is superior to you :p.

I do avoid all these little flaws by fighting fair. Only because there is a bug it doesn't mean you have to exploit it.

Nonetheless there should be a patch dealing with issues like this.

Think the patch is called multiplayer

Here is another Crafy Trick also. When you play the Main Missions in the game. Try hitting your main "Thruster Icon" to go to maximum speed. Like you do when you flying to a waypoint. And just fly around in circles shooting nothing, But staying within the mission area. Then just let the other computer pilots deal with the enemys until there are only a few left. You will still complete the mission "Unless something is asked of you that you need to do in person". And you will not lose any other pilots in the game. Because you simply just stood back and watched. This also makes it pretty impossible for the Enemys to hit you with there guns. There Missles can though! So keep your finger on the Missles decoys button. And just release one when you hear the message saying Incoming Missle. And try to keep a certain distance from them also.

You'll be very surprised how easy it is to complete the missions then.

Major in-game flaw that one!

Read page 15 of the game manual, the top under Advance Throttle and Control and then state how it's a flaw or a bug?

I have not read the manual yet! Why does it point this fact out or something? Regarding the missions, and using the Thruster.

Cutting the throttle and sliding is not a bug. The bug is that NPCs get confused by it when they shouldn't. I know for a fact that I get hit less in huge battles when I cut my engines and use only thrusters than if I use the thrusters with my engines on. It shouldn't work that way. With my engines off, I am flying in a straight line whenever my thrusters are off. That doesn't happen with the engines on. I should be harder to hit with the engines on. Sliding is really only supposed to be useful for changing your own facing faster and thus bringing your forward weapons to bear sooner. It shouldn't make you harder to hit. If you're behind someone that does this, they are effectively motionless with respect to you while they swivel... which is bad for them.

Waitaminit... Freelancer has MULTIPLAYER?!? The only thing I found was a screen that said "connecting to global server" and stays like that until my computer becomes unresponsive. Whee...

I don't have the full game yet (my copy has been shipped today. woohoo!) But i don't think there is something in the manual about enemies turning around and leaving you alone as soon as you kill your engine and turn around yourself.

Can someone go over this "sliding" technique?

Post Sat Mar 22, 2003 4:53 am

hmm well, it's actually quite simple.

have either in cruise or in afterburn, and make sure u are in free flight. then kill your engines (default key binding z) and then the engine stops, but inertia keeps you moving. then, you can re orient your ship in any direction, while shooting (normally at 300m/s the ship cannot shoot, now u can escape AND attack at the same time!!!) and then if u want to, u can do some crazy turning, with a 90 degree to your current heading, the lines onscreen will show you, and then hit tab in bursts to quickly keep a "bogie" off your tail.

I find this tactic useful because the enemy will afterburn if u are burning, and hit u with a cruise disruptor if u try to cruise, and they seem to have unlimited burn charge, so they can out run you. so when nearing the end of your charge, kil your engines and drift until at 100% again.

hope this helps, sorry if it is incomprehensible, im posting at 11:00 PM, so...
