Trail Warning?!

What the heck is a trail warning? I keep getting this message in multiplayer games (out in space). I thought that it was connection problem, but they already have an icon for that one.

I'd like to know too. I assume it means you're being tailed and maybe indicates a good time to drop a mine, but I'm not sure.
