possible bug or i''m missing something (no spoilers)

Ok, i'm level 8 and have my game saved on london in the commodity shop.

According to player stats,

Current Worth: 87k
Next Level: 106k

(give or take some change)

I was going to do a trade run for diamonds. So I bought 30 diamonds for ~ 1k a pop (30k total) and was going to take them to leeds to make a small sum of change. After buying the diamonds, it says I am now level 9, and here's player stats:

Current Worth: 75k
Next Level: Mission

Why's that? How did I go up a level buying diamonds? I restored and tried again, same thing. So I tried to instead buy engine components. 30 of them at 1200 a pop. After buying those, i am still level 8, current worth is 58k, next level remains at 106k.

I'm confused. Someone shed some light on this for me?

thanks!

Your worth isn't just based on earned money or plain cash but your overall worth including, ship, equipment, weapons and cargo. That's why you gain worth and eventually level up by just picking up valuable stuff. I hit the level 2 limit in the demo by just beaming aboard expensive weapons and some cargo from a derelict vessel. It's perfectly normal.

yeah but i didn't find the diamonds. I spent 30,000 to buy them and my worth went down. All the mission levels made sense up to this point, this I just can't grasp.

At any rate I reloaded and just skipped buying the diamonds. I've completed 3 side jobs so far, and another 1-2 and i'll be at the next point. I still don't see how that's the same as just buying diamonds from the commodity guy. I've run so many trade routes to get to this point, just weird that the diamonds gave me such a boost without even having to deliver them...

Yeah, that is strange...Really, your value shouldn't change at all, since you didn't lose or gain anything at that point; just changed money for its equivalent in diamonds. But I remember a couple times after making purchases that my level increased.

This is reaching, but perhaps the game assumed you were going to sell them at profit?

Yeah, my only guess is that you bought the Diamonds at a below average value (good price=Green purchase), and then the game assumes their universe average value for them for determining your net worth, thus increasing your net worth. But in that case, your net worth should of increased above that value you listed that was required for level 9 advancement, and it didn't....so that doesn't completely explain it. What relative value were the engine parts you mentioned bought at? (Red, yellow, or green?) If you bought them at an average price, or a bad price, then your net value would go down (if this logic holds water.)
