Massive error in packaging

ahhhhhh, sorry guys, i didnt mean to put that in capitals, but i had to, im goin crazy about this here, i just noticed on the inside cover and on the back of the FreeLancer box, the word Naval is spelled wrong, according to Websters Dictionary 2002 the way they spelled it, NAVEL actually refers to the BELLYBUTTON and currently things to do with ships or something of the like is spelled NAVAL, a massive mistake, anyone else notice this? i find it quite funny after 5 years of work they make such a stupid mistake in packaging.!!!!

in the inside cover, in the description above the screenshot for StarDate 1287.02.24 they spelled Naval as Navel

in the description for Stardate 1287.03.09 they even spelled Rheinland wrong!!! they spelled it as Rhineland its actually Rheinland in-game!

Yeah, I used to be an editor so that "navel" thing bugged me a lot. I could've sworn I've seen Rhineland used in the game too.. not sure about that one though.

How can you possibly fathom that to be a massive mistake??? If the packaging came out as Frilanser or the manual had Mechwarriors key assignments I would say yeah that's a pretty big mistake. However the mis-spelling of naval is about as important as me pissing on the toilet seat in terms of errors.

I don't really run this place but I have an understanding with the people who do.

(Crocodile Dundee voice): "Nah, that's not a mistake. THIS is a mistake:"

Any American film where someone uses a metal bar to open a door or safe etc: They call it a 'jimmy'. The word is Jemmy.

You would have thought that Microsoft could have hired a proof reader. Or at least use their 'fabulous' grammar-checker in MS Word.

LOL! My sentiments exactly, Mustang.

I noticed that too!

I work at an ad agency, and if stuff like that had gone out in a print run here, especially one as big as this, heads would definitely roll… To the guy who said that it isn't a big deal, tell that to the proofreader who probably got reamed and/or fired over it!

- anyways, they meant navel ORANGES, since he was in the FLORIDA system…

That's not a "massive error." When I was in 7th or 8th grade, my parents bought me (via mail order) F-15 Strike Eagle for the C64. The game came with no diskettes. That's a "massive" packaging error!

Personally stuff like that doesnt bother me, and I definetly describe it as a MASSIVE PACKAGING error.

There were words on the box?

Stormtrooper Tactics 101: Okay class, repeat after me. "There he is! Blast em!" Very good.

I worked for a marketing communications company for a number of years and I can not believe these mistakes!

They obviously did not hire anyone competent to do the cover job. This should be very embarrasing for them..

oh well, I dont give a rats butt about the box! The game is good.

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 10:27 pm

the game is great, and it may not be a massive error. but i find it quite surprising that nobody agrees a game and company of this magnitude with many great games among other things, should be having someone that cant even spell Naval right on their package, i for one would find it extremely embarassing to have some ass who want proofread make the company look incompetent

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 10:28 pm

Well, the box also talks about New Florida and Chicago in Liberty and Gunter in Rhineland. They also talked about "unique" civilian and pirate ships... I don't think the people that worked on the box knew anything about the game, maybe that its about space ships...

And where'd they get those stardate things, year in FL is around 800 lol

Not that it really matters at all as far as the game is concerned, but i hope somebody got beheaded over this, no way they shoulda messed that one up

Geez - you guys are harsh. Sometimes little mistakes like that slip by whole groups of people. I'm sure some have you have written papers before and have proofread them several times, but still had an error somewhere. Same thing here. In fact, one of my professors talked about a whole ad campaign he worked on once where the whole team who made it (him included) looked over it repeatedly, and they STILL missed a minor error (in this case, capitalization). Trust me - this is a thorough guy. It happens. I think Digital Anvil/Microsoft should maybe investigate why it happened and if it was a genuine mistake that slipped through, maybe a repremand, but firing someone or "beheading" them over this seems a bit much. (And yes, typos do bother me, and it definitely seems more professional without them, but they still sometimes happen).

Yeah, sheesh. Sure, ok, I grant that someone should have caught these before it went out. But is it really so important that we have to sit around here yelping about it and hoping people get murdered for it? Can I get a mod to lock this thread please, just for the sake of its sheer absurdity?
