multiplayer vs singleplayer

I have dial up.. and a real slow one so i can't exactly play MP without lagging the hell out of myself. I'm just wondering whats the difference between single and multiplayer? what do you get in multiplayer that you don't get in single player? Do people cheat in multiplayer?

Multiplayer is basically the singleplayer game minus the plot missions, but with other people playing with you (or against you, if you're into that sort of thing.) It's been popularly referred to as "Diablo in Space" because of the way you team up with a few friends and venture out into a dungeon (or the cold reculse that is space) to kill a few demons (or terrorist space ships) and gather the precious treasure that explodes out of them like candy out of a piñata.
