Prefer cockpit view or third person?

Just trying to get a general idea of how most of you play usually. I would like the first person cockpit view much better if it was a true cockpit view and you could see your controls and out the sides. Third person seems to be better most of the time for functionality but I don't feel as much in the game as I do looking from first person so it's a hard trade-off to make. I really wish they had 3 views...true cockpit, unobscured first person, and third person.

I absolutely do prefer the cockpit view. There is nothing more intense than sitting in the ship yourself. I simply wouldn't have bought the game if it hadn't a cockpit view. Yes, it's that important for me.

It depends on the situation and the ship.

If im exploring, ill do third person. If im in combat and the ship im using is HUGE, ill do first person, but if the ship is small, ill do third. Over all im a third person sorta guy. I like to hear the engine and weapons sounds.

If it was a sim, I'd prefer cockpit. Because of the way this game is set up, however, I actually prefer third person.

I like lookinga round with turret view, and you can hit targets you normally can't when you're in 3rd... but that stupid engine flare gets mighty annoying to look at... especially on long cruise runs.

Haven't tried it yet, but can't you click "cockpits" off in one of the options menus and then go to an "unobscured" 1st person view? I think that's the case yet I haven't tried. I'm going to bed now, so hopefully someone knows the answer since i won't check until tomorrow.

Yeah, you can see and fight a lot better in third in my opinion because of the way the controls and turrets/guns work in this game, and I think flying through debris fields and maneuvering is just a bit better since you can see more around you. Though I can't say the flare effects have bothered me - I kinda like seeing my ship, flares included.

Just as a side-note, in thinking of games that this reminds me of, believe it or not one of the most similar games now that I think about it (which I also loved) was a game called Interstate 76. Perhaps some of you played it. Yeah, it was a car game, but very similar in that you could have a limited first person or 3rd person view, third was preferred, and it was also similar in the way you configured your car, fought, and got weapons from other destroyed cars, etc. It wasn't really open-ended like FreeLancer, but besides that fact, the gameplay was pretty darn similar in my mind.

Third person is the best for this game in my opinion.. I love to use the free-floating turret view when exploring.

Unfortunately you can't play as well in first person view.

1.The gunflashes are blocking the entire view
2.You don't get a feeling for your ship if you want to do a dog fight in the debris field or so, so you collide all the time, which you don't in 3rd person view
3.You seem to hit better with 3rd person view

The only problem with 3rd person is when the enemy's right where your ship is on the screen. Then you have to really search for that floating red leader to keep fighting. But that only happens for about 2 seconds max, then the guy you're shooting at veers off and you follow.

Heavy fighters and freighters practically demand 3rd person for the turret view. It's ok, though, since I like it =)

Since this is basically a space shooter and not a simulator, and when you factor in that 3rd person gives you a huge tactical advantage in most situations, it basically boils down to the only viable choice.

I have found NO use for third person view. I play in cockpit mode only. Anything else would be blasphemy. I think this is supposed to be a space sim like Privateer 1. I should probably try out 3rd person view for fighting, but I don't think it will work as well as 1st person/cockpit.

1st person is the only way to go. I'll leave 3rd person to the console players.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

I prefer cockpit view...

I played with nothing but 3rd person view at first for a while, because I liked the wider view in battle. But now I like the cockpit view most... Don't know why, I guess it's more realistic.

You realize statements like the above are PURE trolls, right?

I use both views and find them both to be fun. I like the variety.

I think it is absurd to flame someone for which view they prefer, or to argue that using one view or another makes someone a "twink."
