I was always wondering...would it have been possible for Digital Anvil to turn this game into a Space Sim/FPS/RPG hybrid? By this i mean, that when we land on a planet, we can actually explore it ourselves using either a first person or third person points of view. Can you imagine actually navigating the streets of Manhattan and shooting Libery Rouges while on your way to the bar? I this just too much for current game makers to do? Having one interface for flying and fighting in space, and then another FPS type interface for when you're adventuring on the planet, instead of just static point and click stations and planets we have in freelancer. This is my idea of the PERFECT game. Flying from system to system, from planet to planet, just like in Freelancer, but also being able to actually explore the planets like in an RPG game or a FPS game like Unreal 2. This would be a huge game to make i think, at least 3 or 4 CD's, cuz you'd have to have the space maps, interface, ships, etc, and then you'd have to have planetary and space station maps to go along with rifles and shotguns and pistols while exploring on foot.
Bad idea. The game will lose genre focus and core target group. The saying goes: "A hunter that hunts for two rabbits at once will end up with nothing". And what kind of character Trent will be? a Rambo who can fly anything from a broomstick and carpet to starfighters and can still kick a bunch of marines' ass armed only with bow and arrows? I like my character be good at only one thing. Keep the story believable, don't turn it into some kind of bad B-movie.
What in the holy **** are you babbling on about? Did you even read what i said? did you play the single player game? How is having an ace pilot who can also take care of himself planetside destroy the game? If you had watched the storyline cutscenes you would of noticed that Trent is very good with a pistol and there were several times when he and Juni had to fight people on the planet. Now why not translate this into a second aspect of Freelancer? I mean we already have a Space aspect and a planet/station aspect. My only question is why not expand the planet/station aspect into a FPS aspect where you actually control Trent yourself. This is not so far fetched, all you're doing is expanding on what's already there. Imagine how amazing it would be exploring a nomad planet or space station or walking through the streets of New Berlin or New Tokyo.
I'm really sorry for having my own opinion! Please forgive me!
Seriously, it's gonna be like watching Pearl Harbor with both my parents. Mom said not enough lovey-dovey and too much explosion, dad said too much sappiness and not enough pyro. FL is going to be like that: too much FPS for the trader/space-simmer, and too much trading crap and piloting for the FPRers. Both genre fans will only give it a lukewarm ratings from both aspects, and end up with a 56% score instead of the 87% it has now.

Not really, any person who plays a game like this would like exploring planets just as much as space. After all this is an "open-ended" do whatever you want type of game. So if they dont want to muck around on the planet they can go right back into space, same goes for people who've been flying the trade lanes for hours and feel the urge to land on the nearest planet and start exploring some of the towns/cities on the planet.
That would be Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter, a game scheduled for release sometime later this year (although it may get pushed back again) on both the PC and Xbox. Its biggest feature is you can seamlessly go from FPS to space sim with no load times.
