Box size of US Freelancer

Yeah, well, looks like I was wrong. Today, my original US version of Freelancer arrived, instead of monday / tuesday next week as I had expected.

The game came in a tiny cardbox. Not those great uber-boxes I´m used to, but in a small 8" x 5.25" box. Is this something they´ve done for better shipping to foreign countries or are the boxes like that US-wide?

It's the standard US size. You foreigners made us do it =P

Yah, the standard PC game box size has been reduced to save on costs and resources. All games should be coming out with these boxes.

Is it only Microsoft which has paper sleeves for the CDs or do all small boxed games have paper sleeves?

Does this mean there will never be those uber-boxes again? Ever?
*bursts out in tears*

@EB
The Moo3 CDs came in paper sleeves, too. Before that, Haegemonia and SoA came in the usual CD cases.

Go take a look at the neverwinter nights and warcraft 3 collector's editions if you want to see big boxes. There will always be big ones for the special occasions.

BF1942 and it's expansion came in miniboxes and real jewel cases

UT2k3 was in a minibox but had actual *paper* sleeves, rather than the cardboard one like freelancer.

The box size was reduced more for economy of shelf space in retail stores. I'd say the fact that they "use less resources" is just a by-product and that statements like that are made by game publishers as ecological PR PC BS.

Odd, I got bf42 in a huge sized box, but I got the cd in a jewel case, so I was happy any way

This interesting part is how the industry will deal with games that require a huge thick manual. Will the manual shrink also and just include a magnifying glass instead?

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 6:42 pm

No, they'll just make the manuals contain less flair and backstory, and just have basic instructions. The rest will be included on the CD as a PDF file.

My Neverwinter Nights came in one of the smaller boxes. I don't remember the last game I bought that didn't. I guess it's good because they stopped making the contents of game boxes interesting a long time ago. The last one I was really impressed with was Ultima IX.

Stormtrooper Tactics 101: Okay class, repeat after me. "There he is! Blast em!" Very good.

Yes, I think the first game I got in the new "mini-box" design was Neverwinter Nights, too. Electronic Arts were the first to do this, then the other publishers in the industry simply followed suit.

Personally, I'd prefer to see every game packaged in DVD-style jewel cases, like they did with Max Payne. For the games bundling thicker manuals than the norm, they could use the double-disc variety.

The first mini box I got was Jedi Knight II, I believe. I had the same thoughts when our computer game industry started doing these things. It is funny though, because companies like Blizzard made WarCraft III in the big and small box. I actually miss the big box, but the smaller box is easier to store, I must say.

do you guys keep your Game box?? or you throw it out and keep only the cd ??

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 7:46 pm

I throw the box away. Thats why I am glad they changed the box size. I wish the industry would just sell the games in DVD cases only. The only time they would need a box is when the game has a manual that is too big to fit in the DVD case. But most games have small manuals anyways.
