Some comments on feedback I''ve seen about Freelancer

Hey all,

Thought I'd make a much briefer post than my review on some thoughts about Freelancer in response to a lot of the feedback I've seen here, especially those talking about disappointment with the game.

First of all, for those still considering it, I think there are better choices out there IF you're looking for more of a simulation. I'd highly recommend games like X-Wing Alliance or the Freespace series if that's your goal - they offer very nice campaigns as well as allowing you to create custom missions. If you're looking for a simulation with trading elements, that's a bit more difficult (perhaps X2 that's been discussed, though I've never played any of those games - there's also the older Privateer 2).

That said, half the fun of Freelancer is to me the fact the universe is so vast and waiting to be explored. If you're not an explorer, this probably isn't the game for you to be blunt. The interface seems to be designed more around a good, simple mix of fighting, trading, and exploring than a simulation, and I think that's the best type of interface this game could have. It seems like less than a simulation, but more than an arcade game - a good think in my mind. I can't even imagine joystick support being anywhere near as functional in the game (and I had at first been upset it was not there like a lot of you).

Also, I've seen a lot of posts wanting more saying it ended too quickly for and there's not enough to do now. Funny thing is, not all (but quite a few) are people who either used some sort of cheat to get a lot of money immediately and buy the most powerful things in the game, or else they looked up the best trade route in the game and used it repeatedly to max out there stuff. Folks, my opinion is that's not the point. The point is discovering this stuff for yourself slowly and taking your time. I don't have the full version yet, but when I do get it I plan on slowly working my way out and exploring each area, taking the story missions slowly and not rushing to get to the next one. I'm going to try to find most of the secrets myself as well (though eventually I may look at a guide to find anything I missed). I think that a slow, gradual pace is what the developers intended, and I think a lot of people have missed this and just tried to rush as fast as they can through the campaign, ruining their own fun in the process. It's fine if people want to go through a game as fast as possible, but I think other games are suited and meant for that much more than this one, and those looking for this would be better off looking into one of them instead.

Finally, while I FULLY agree that it's a bit disappointing there aren't more random mission types (which I elaborated on in my review of the demo - I still hope they add some and make this game even more of a hit), I can't say (at least for the single player aspect) that it cripples it *THAT* much. A little sure, but honestly once I've explored everything in the game, which will be fun as is, I can't say that I would keep playing it significantly longer even if there were other random mission types. Perhaps a little bit, yes, and it would make the times between missions a bit more diverse, and it would make hopping back in once and a while for a few quick missions more appealing, but overall it wouldn't change it that drastically. Multiplayer is another story and it would make a bigger difference there in my opinion, but I probably won't get into that for some time if at all.

That's all I have to say, and the above is simply my personal opinion. If you disagree with me, that's fine, and I'm not trying to attract any flames (or flame anyone for that matter). Just thought I'd put in my two cents.

Shaun

P.S. My copy shipped today. <=o)

You forgot to mention:

The ships and effects are lacking. They're hardly the worst, but they could be better. But in the case of Freelancer, this isn't necessarially a bad thing. Playing with full settings maxed, I can't even detect a slight performance hit when there's 12 enemies swooping among the asteriods gunning for me, as a battlecruiser and its gunships puverize rock around me. And no, I don't have a powerhouse computer. P3 800mhz, 512 RAM. The only DECENT thing I have is a Geforce4, and until I get a better processor, it's running at about a geforce 2.5

Stability. I've only twice had this game lock up on me, and it was immidiately solved by updating my drivers. No lock ups, no hiccups, no screwy images. Nothing. This game is, as far as I can tell, flawless in this regard. (And if anyone makes stupid jokes about it being the only non-crashing MS product, I'm going to break some faces )

Graphically, Freelancer blows me away actually. (I have a longer review in another post where I covered these issues in more detail, but I'll answer briefly here). I think it's the immense size and cleanness of the objects - something just clicks and looks really good to me (thought it is subjective) - effects too. I have heard others say they don't like the graphics, but they look just about perfect to me - debris fields and anomolies are especially impressive (not just the images, but the way things move). And I agree the best thing is the framerate. To get it looking this good and playing this smooth, they had to have done some major optimizing.

I don't have the full yet, but I've had ZERO issues with the demo. It's one of the most stable games I've played in a long time. It even plays perfectly with other things running in the background, and it works great with task switching (ie. getting an instant message, hearing it, alt-tabbing out to do what you need to do with it, and then going right back in without so much as a hiccup). Maybe I'm just lucky with the hardware configuration I have (and I do have the latest drivers), but I'd say most people experiencing problems have some sort of driver issue as you suggest.

I started playing Freelancer with below average expectations.

I knew almost nothing can re-capture the good times i have with WC, Privateer and Armada.

And IMHO, it's by far the best space sims in years. Privateer2 sucks big-time, and remains in a dark recess of my memory (the ship designs were good though).

A lot of effort has gone into this game, and they really took advantage of directx9.

Well, at least, we don't get LAME acting...

Pros of Freelancer:
1) Good storyline
2) Excellent use of tradelinks and warp gates
3) Fast reload times and stability
4) Vast universe
5) More stuff to buy and sell
6) Good environmental graphics of asteriods and clouds
7) Nav system and entire Hud feels better in station.
8) Irritatng tractor beam simplified
9) Excellent shots(voice acting), way better than PV2.

Cons of Freelancer:"
1) Boring normal in-between missions
2) No wingmen for hire
3) Oversimplified cockpit and feel - every ship feels abt the same, dun have the 'woah, i'm in a new ship' feeling
4) No different angled fly-bys
5) Over-simplified, yet initially confusing commodity buying and selling
6) Ships are relatively boring in design and naming convention. WC series and PV2 have some ships that are very imposing.
7) Weapons are somehow not as impressive sounding as before.

You really hurt my feelings there...

I remember liking Privateer 2 okay (been a while), but what I didn't like was the story. I don't remember it making a lot of sense at the time. LOL. Other than that, the game seemed alright. I remember the ships were cool and the graphics pretty good at the time. It must not have made a huge impression on me though - can't even remember if I finished it or not.

Privateer-X, I agree with most of your pros and cons. So far (just the trial version) the ships seem fine to me and some of the simplicity I find refreshing, but overall I see your points.

Um...this game doesn't use DX9. I'm not even sure it uses DX8. You can play this game with DX8.2, just so you know...

But I agree that the graphics in this game are great. The developers have combined space flight with motion captured people animation. They did good.

The graphics aren't really great, but there good enough that they don't ruin the gameplay or anything. Even better, I managed to get this game running on my old 450 mhz computer at a decent framerate, which is quite cool The only problem is the text doesn't display right. I think the video card is some sort of ATI Rage, I'm not sure, its whatever I found lying around after I transfered my Radeon to a new system

Not a system hog. Very good pro.
Mouse interface. Very good pro. IMHO

Radioactive Yeti, just curious (since I'm quite impressed with the graphics), but what about them don't you like?

I think part of the fact they seem so great to me is their smoothness, so maybe since your system is a little below the requirements that's what's missing? Also, is detail to max? Depending on the graphics card, it may not display certain effects (Just to make sure you don't misunderstand, I'm not dissing your system at all - I think it's great it runs so well for you).

I've seen several reviews saying the graphics are good but not great, and I have to say I'm always confused when I read this. It's true I haven't played a ton of games recently, but I really think Freelancer is beautiful compared to many, especially things like explosions.

Can't believe no one mentioned independence war II, which is the most realistic "space sim" IMHO... The realism extends beyond physics but applies to scale, scenery, and other things as well...

Didn't mention that one because I've never played it. Though I may check out the demo for IDW2 this weekend. I've heard it's pretty complex, but I would imagine it's fun once you get the hang of it.

guptasa1

Good review!
I agree with most of what you say also. I am taking my time ( 25 hours game time so far and I am in mission 6 ) and looking around. Mapping all the systems and such, etc. A lot of times Juni tells me she is waiting and I let her wait some more..hehe. Women will respond to you better if you make them wait some. *grins.

I also seem to notice a lot of little things in the game some of the posters overlooked because they are allways in a hurry or have such negative thoughts about the game..they miss out. For one...the prices for commodities are not "allways" static. I observed once when it was not...and I will not go into details so as not to spoil the game for someone.

It is so clear to me some of the complaints people make are by people who have not played the game very much and maybe only post because thier favorite game is not as good as Freelancer...hehe. I mean they make statements that are simply not true.
