Privateer lovers, this is OUR game. Minor spoilers

My unbiased review: First of all, I hate computer games. Specifically, I have a love/hate relationship with computer games. I am frequently disappointed, but I keep coming back for more. I gobble up the hype, but the game never lives up to my expectations.

Not so with Freelancer. Sure, with any game of this scope, there will be things that I would have done differently. But a successful game delivers a couple positive surprises for every one disappointment.

Freelancer delivers 10 serendipitys for every one disappointment, probably the best ratio I've ever seen.

MY HISTORY:
Privateer 1 and add on, were AWESOME. They are one of the few games that ever captured my imagination. The universe, the combat, the openendedness. I've spent the last 10 years trying to get back the "magic" of Privateer.

Privateer 2 was a steaming pile of dung. Nuff' said.

XBTF had no soul. The combat was bland, no real mouse support, no real story. Too openended, too much working. Some good ideas, poor implementation.

XBTF Xtension - some reviewer said made it "more like Privateer" so I tracked it down in England (Never was sold in the states) and that too, had no soul, no real mouse support (IIRC, no mouse support at all).

X2 - From what I've seen, and now that I have a TRUE sequel to Privateer, I'm not sure I'm interested, especially if I get another slap in the face and they don't include Mouse support.

IWAR2 - I passed on IWAR. A reviewer said IWAR2 was "kind of like Privateer" so, of course, I bought it. It was fun, beautiful and the story was good, but still the magic was not there. Again, no mouse support. I bought a very nice joystick and got used to using it, but I still prefer a well implemented mouse support.

MOUSE SUPPORT:
I prefer Mouse support. Today many games stopped supporting the mouse. Xwing and Tie Fighter supported the mouse, then Xwing vs. Tie fighter did not and many flight sims do not. The way the mouse works in Freelancer is elegant, easy to learn and still gives me pleanty of different ways to fly my ship based on my style. I feel like I'm piloting a ship, its awesome.

OPENENDEDNESS:
This universe is HUGE. At first, you are restricted to only a few systems, but there is a lot to see. Lots of hidden areas, hidden jumpholes, bases, abandoned ships, Battleships with rare ships you can buy, etc. You have to progress in the single player campaign to open up more systems, but each system has so much to see it would take days of solid playtime to see it all. I'm 20 play hours into this game and have seen maybe 15% of the universe. When you level up and the campaign missions start blinking for your attention, you can (apparently) ignore them as long as you want and continue to explore. Early in the game there are still a lot of places that I simply cannot go. Just too dangerous. You can sneak around those places if you really want too, but thats the way I like it, while your low level, some places SHOULD make me nervous!

TRAVEL:
The trade lanes are excellent. There are many times I get pulled out by a disruptor and need to run for my life. Very scary sometimes, but there are things you can do like go into formation with other neutral partys for protection. The hidden warp holes are great! I could see playing as a pirate and just using the hidden lanes to get from system to system.

COMBAT:
Again, excellent. You can bob, side to side, hit reverse and have a bogey fly past you, hide behind an asteroid, drop a mine, fire a torpedo, load up with missles, load up with energy weapons, find hard to aquire ships for sale on the far side of a planet at a Battleship (in Bretonia... minor spoiler there). You can do cargo runs for cash or take different missions for cash.

MISSIONS:
Yes, they could use more variety. Good excuse for an addon pack and/or a patch. But I do like the campaign missions, decent storyline and for variety I like to do cargo runs and explore the many, many wastelands and find hidden ships, bases, etc.

ECONOMICS:
There are a lot of commodoties that will probably never get bought, simply because they don't pay much. But while you are doing campaign missions, you can check whats for sale and make a few credits by seeing what is needed where you are going. PLUS: each commodoties shows you how much its worth and where! Its excellent. However, it will only show you prices at stations you have visited, giving you another reason to explore.

I could go on, but I'll stop. IN short, the magic is back. I love this game, and I am NOT easy to please

Me no gun

I agree with you on all the above apart from privateer2.you see i never played p1 so i cant compare the two games. I thought p2 was excelent, and spent many a month playing it.looks like i missed out on a even better game in p1.But i wont miss out on FL ive already orderd it from the us.

Great post Iron Giant. I too have been looking for a game that could match Elite and, especially, Privateer 1 in all of their glory.

Saber, if you haven't played the first Privateer, I HIGHLY suggest it. Privateer 2 was terrible, and if you play the first one, you will see what us old timers are talking about! =)

I tottaly agree on the soullessnes you mention. Freelancer just has a good vibe to it. i did play I-war and it just didnt get to me like freelancer has.

It could also just be juni

One of the things I don´t like in Freelancer is that you must use the Jump Gates to travel between systems and you cannot land on Planets by flying through their atmosphere.
I played FRONTIER ELITE II (its from 1993) in the past and it was HUGE!!!
There were ca. 100.000.000.000 !!!!!!!!!!!Planets and Moons where you can land on.
It was the first Space game with real 3D Polygon Graphics and you could do everything manually. Land on planets, stations and travel with your Jump drive.
It was made very realistic and with the "Big Planet Blaster" you could destroy a whole Planet.
I hope that a new "Elite" game will come and give me these things back!

I also played Privateer I which had nicer graphics and a better story, but there was not much to explore. Priv II had a great Story but I didn´t like it so much as part one.

So, thats what I had to say.....

Elite 4 is supposed to be coming out. The original creater of Elite is working on it. No word on when he will have it out though. Try a search for it and you should get an official website for Elite 4.

Does anyone know when X2 is coming out. I played X:BTF and X-Tension, but really was not able to get into those games. I like the open-ended game play but also like some story there. Anyway, FL is keeping me occupied, so who cares when X2 comes out!!!!

If you're waiting for another alternative to the space/trading genre, check out http://www.eve-online.com/. It's a massive online multiplayer game, but will supposedly have SP too (AFAIR).

Look at that, 3 posts in a row for other games. Can I go on their forums and advertise Freelancer and exclaim those games are nothing compared to Freelancer too?

haha, anyway...

P2 was definitely not up to par with P1, though fun.

To the person who said why do you have to use Jumpgates/wormholes to go between systems. Have you tried just going? I read someone else post they tried to fly to the end of a system, and just kept going and going and going, like the Energizer bunny Maybe, just maybe, there aren't real boundaries. Maybe it'll just take 15 hours or 5 days or something to cross the distance, assuming you don't miss your trajectory Anyone really tried this?

To the original poster, 100% agree. Good, detailed thoughts with reasons for why you have the opinions you have. just wish those who dislike the game would do the same rather than just spouting negativity. Don't like the game if you want, but don't post about it without giving actual reasons why, doing so makes you not look well thought out.

The only thing I see so far, and I'm at mission 7, is the story is too short I have been here like 3 days, and have intentionally taken the time to go exploring and trading and making loads of money rather than do the missions cause I fear it'll end too soon

It needs some medium-length random missions; more than just going and killing something. I was thinking they could make an add-on which allows you to join an organization ( though you can go back to being a freelancer anytime ) and there could be longer missions in those as you rise in rank. Considering that all the single-player story missions ( that I've seen so far ) are strickly in-game based and not fancy cutscenes, it seems logical they could add new missions relatively easy.

With a galaxy as big as the one they provide, you could have a great many single-player campaigns. They could even sell stories for like $10 a piece-- they just wouldn't be factored in to gaining levels.

good ideas. you know, as i recall the original Privateer, I seem to remember some of the cargo missions did require you to hop up to 6 systems away, and forced you to go into dangerous areas.

That would be a nice patch feature

Its a fun game so far, but as good as Elite or Privateer when those came out? So far I would have to say no.

But, it would be the closest thing to either that I have ever played.

My unbiased review:

Way to stub your toe on the threshold coming in. I see you haven't tried Elite, Frontier, First Encounters or HardWar?

Frontier / Frontier: First Encounters
First Encounters directX exe replacement
Home of the Underdogs now hosts a playable verison of HardWar.

And please, this is in no way "advertising" other games. Even the first post mentioned other games that might interest fans of Freelancer. There is nothing that says the existance of other games in the same genre DEMANDS there to be advocacy as soon as they are mentioned.
